My recently acquired MI6 operational vessel has two identical engines with two almost identical instrument panels. Not usually one to worry but this mystery green light has had me awake at night. Does anyone know what it might be for ? Only on the port engine and it does not illuminate when turning the key to instruments on or heater plugs. I've never seen it on. It's a bit awkward to get to the wiring. Might be something obvious.

Do I remember you saying only one engine has reverse? Could it be a reverse light? One engine going each way would be embarrassing.

No both engines are the same. Handed props/gearboxes but everything works the same on both units other than prop rotation.
It doesn't come on under normal use. There will be a reason for it as there is an orange light to remind you if you leave the light on in the toilet compartment but that's not on the engine control panel.
Oh I wonder if it's engine room lights left on..
ETA no not that, or it might be if bulb has gone. I did actually flatten battery leaving engine room lights on so it could be that.

Just checked all the switches and it doesn't seem to be that but it's a good suggestion. Now wondering if the bulb is gone. As with everything else on the boat which is openable the panel there does have slotted screws which indicates a removable part so might be worth investigating the bulb situation.. I would not be surprised if you are right about the nav lights

Could it just be to tell you the green light is on?

Could it just be to tell you the green light is on? I would be able to accept that theory if I had ever seen it illuminated.

My Beta 43 installed in 2018 has a green light on the control panel which only illuminates when the engine is running, and appears to serve no other purpose. Shortly after installation the light failed ... turned out to be a faulty bulb holder, but it proved the light served no purpose but indicate the engine is running. Bizarre really ... dim as I am, even I can tell if an engine's running without an illuminated light Rog

The reason for it being there is as you suggest to indicate that the engine is running. This is discounted as a theory for me because on this boat there are two engines but only one of them has the green light. It's possible it only illuminates when particular "green light" situations occur. having never experienced this perhaps it will be an eye opener.
