Can any of you good (and not so goon on occasions) folk reccomend some replcement (well I'm going to ADD rather than replace) sturdy hinges for the gas locker please? - one of mine is "stretching" but not quite broken yet... I'd rather back it up than wait for it to break... the "gap" in the hingy bit needs to be about 1.5cm but I'm having trouble finding suitable bolt on ones... (I no longer have a welder)

cheers - trouble with all the hinges i can find is that they don't show a measurement of the "gap" between hinged and static bits of you follow ... I suppose I could just order them and if they don't fit, send them back.

The way these things tend to work is that you set the centre of the hinge to the point equidistant between the two pieces if you can imagine that. Thus the 'gap' becomes slightly academic. Also, getting the hatch to stay in the right pace while fitting the hinges could be awkward. I have seen welders use magnets to overcome similar difficulties.

Being one of the goon folk you refer to can I suggest hair gel as a retainer? look, my brain types faster than my fingers can manage - suffering dyspraxia (and quite often dyspepsia) along with carpel tunnel syndrome, it's a miracle I can type at all lol. LUCKILY being a ginner, my general fabulousness wins the day now be a good chap and change your user name so that Martin can have his back if he comes back would you? - thanks muchly. PS - Gel didn't work... don't you think I tried that first?

A Mullet? To add insult to injury, dad's got more than me! Be lucky to get a full head of hair these days. It grows everywhere else, why not on the crown of my head? It was OK in the last century.
With my new stove pipe hat, it won't matter so I'll wear it all the time.

I've sorted those thanks now... not ideal but sturdy enough to do the job until I can get proper ones back on again... once they are primed and painted they'll blend in and in a few weeks I won't even notice them - ergo, this may be a LONG term solution lol

That's an abominable abortion, get it fixed properly. If this is an example of your boat maintenance its a wonder its still afloat. As a ginger you should be a perfectionist. Most are. Wrong birth sign?

Wrong birth sign? It'll be fine with a dab of grey paint. Are you one of those folk who spends more time washing and polishing a boat than going out in it.

For a little fella with a big silly hat, that seemed a bit rude Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Painted up it'll be functional, which is really what you need on a working boat. Rog

I'm sure IKB isnt as sharp as he likes to make out.
That approach is entirely correct, nice and simple, prevents any future failure and allows time to do the job at your convenience.
For what it's worth, fully welding those original hinges was a crap idea from the start. I'd have drilled and tapped the hinges and set them in a bed of sikaflex, that way they can be easily removed if and when they fail.
That will be an utter bastard of a job to try and cut the originals off.
I'd look at trying to get a matching pair and do the above, you can always cut the hinge part of the originals off leaving the welded leafs (for want of a better word!) in place - I would have thought that would look reasonably smart with minimum hassle.

I have a feeling that IKB wasn't being entirely serious.
Perhaps the hinges just needed an oil change...
