Trying to work out what to do this year, last year we shuffled the boat down to Stratford and back, boat is on the Ashby but heading towards Fradley I think is this years plan, have been left at Fradley so thinking right towards Burton and maybe Nottingham..
Anybody advise what its like that way, moorings ok to leave the boat for two weeks at a time, places to eat drink...
Oh, do I have to go near a river to get into Nottingham, not a fan of them and prefer the muddy ditch option?

I spent quite a while on the T&M a few years back (based at Shardlow for a couple of years) It's a great cruising area, the few (shortish) river sections are pretty benign under normal conditions. Lots of good pubs / places to moor

There have been boat burglaries at Alrewas. We went that way last June, from Fradley to Burton-on-Trent to the river Soar. All OK. 2 low bridges in Burton (had to take bikes off roof). Willington has railway station close to canal, handy for trips to Derby, Matlock, Uttoxeter.

So looking at the map, river runs from Derwent to Beeston lock?
Not to bad I guess and would be in August so might be ok.

A lovely slow trip down T&M, a couple of miles of the Trent, then right on the Soar linking up with the GU Leicester line to Foxton and back round via Braunston and the north Oxford.
But leaving the boat on the Soar's not a good idea ... it can rise and fall quickly.
Lovely ring though if you can time it so you're not leaving it on river sections, or leave it in safe spots (marinas).

The Trent from Trent lock (junction with the Soar) down to Nottingham doesn't hold many worries with it being on a river if you do want to make a down and back.
I agree with Rog about the Soar, a smashing trip but not a place to leave a boat unattended
and Ross (as you might expect) was being a twat with his comment

"Moored at Alrewas. Went over to Ashby Canal to meet up with Mike & Iris. Had a great time catching up over a jar or two in the Globe. Had to cut our visit short as we had to get back to Sheffield to visit Graham's Mum in hospital. When we returned we found that we had all our diesel stolen. The first night off the boat and this happens to dampen our spirits." narrowboatkoi.blogspot.com/2010/08/moored-at-alrewas.html

"In early hours of Mon 5 September, damage was caused to 2 boats moored up on the Trent and Mersey canal in Alrewas area. The canvas on one boat was slashed and there was a footprint on the window. Youths were heard and seen walking past, in drink, during the night and the man on the boat heard a bang and discovered the damage in the morning." waterwaywatch.org/staffordshire-police-set-up-local-canal-watch/

Oh, do I have to go near a river to get into Nottingham, not a fan of them and prefer the muddy ditch option? It’s not my favouritist direction, but it’s OK. Short bit of small river just after Alrewas, then back onto the cut and alongside the noisy a A38 for ages, gets better after Barton. Branston good place to stop, central Burton probably not. Willington is fine but can get busy. Handy Midland Chandlers at Willington marina. Locks then become wide and fairly deep, but no worries going down hill. Beware annoying bossy Volockies at Stenson! Then quite a pleasant rural stretch, even though in fact pretty close to Derby. Shardlow is a classic canal village. Then onto the trent for a short trip to Sawley cut. I’ve never really liked it there, im sure it’s safe, but soul-less. Then onto the trent again. Straight on at the crossroads for Nottingham (mind the enormous Thrumpton weir!). Or right for the Soar. There’s a fairly long stretch of cut through nottingham. The Trent down to Cromwell is quite pleasant as big rivers go. Newark is a great place. But you are on a big river and need to take care if the weather gets very wet. If you want relaxing and no worries leaving the boat, I’d turn left at Fradley. There’s loads to visit - the Caldon canal is great if you haven’t done it, the Macclesfield nice too, though perhaps water issues this summer. Middlewich branch lovely... and lots more.

I fancied the Caldon a couple of years ago but never got up there, more I think about it the more I think it might be a better option, could save the other way for doing the Leicester ring one day... Would need to shuffle the boat up at weekends as we only have five days on the boat in August to do it, could move the boat up to Stone and use that as our starting/finishing point, fancy a steady few days this time, no rushing around...

If you do turn left at Fradley allow for a stop at Shugborough Hall (just before Gt Haywood) Well worth the visit

Hi, All these reports are from 9 and 10 years ago, any chance of something a bit more recent instead of this “cut and paste piffle”. The same thieves still live in Alrewas. They are 9 or 10 years older, that's all, and more experienced. Anyway, there were recent boat break-ins in Alrewas before Christmas (2019), what do you have to say about those, eh? Purple Twat.
