ok, will be setting off from Stone on Saturday morning, as harecastle tunnel is only open certain days we will take our time with a view to going through Monday, then a couple of days up to middlewich junction, cant decide if we should then head to Ellesmere or carry on up to the bridgewater..
Thinking it might be best to finish the T&M then do the bridgewater and L&L into Liverpool, then dump the boat somewhere for the winter and resume in the spring heading towards ellesmere, Llangollen and back down the Shropshire....
How long can you stay on the bridgewater, is it 7 days before paying?
Can you leave your boat on the bridgewater if not on it?

I don't know if C&RT are yet taking bookings to go into Liverpool ... perhaps discovering that would give you a steer as to which direction to go. 7 days on the Bridgewater ... and I was told to get a mooring you need a Bridgewater licence ... and to get a Bridgewater licence you need a mooring ! There are marinas up the top of the L&L ... Andyberg and lollygagger should be able to help. I think it's a great idea to move your base, as it allows access to new areas. Good luck with it. Rog

froggy, if you are doing the T&M to the Bridgewater, why not have a side trip down the Anderton and spend some time on the Weaver? Then instead of going straight along the Bridgewater stay on the T&M. There are a couple of marinas near the top of the Anderton, a large one on the same side as the lift and a smaller one on the opposite side. I left Shapfell for a couple of months in the smaller one, I can't remember details but found it pleasant and helpful and not wallet destroying.

They were cancelling bookings for Liverpool @froggy ... don't know if they've yet reinstated them.
Similarly the Anderton was closed but it may now have opened up ... not checked.

ETA Appears to be still shut.

How far can you get on the L&L at the minute then, as in close to Liverpool city center, is it just the four locks near the basin that is closed?

You book visits to Liverpool online through the C&RT licensing pages ... however I've just checked and it's not available to do so at present.
Perhaps a phone call to C&RT will clarify for you.
I enjoyed the trip into Liverpool as far as Melling (bridge 10) but wouldn't bother to go further if not travelling into the docks.
I believe beyond that point bridges and locks have to be timed operations by C&RT staff ... the arrangements have changed since we did it in 2017.

Rog Everything is now self service until the final locks down to the docks. The bridges that used to be CRT operated are now self service, however a couple have quite restrictive operating times to avoid creating traffic jams. The times are covered in CRT's informtion about the canal. Outside the permitted times, the bridge controls are dead.

Yes, unless there are any other specific stoppages, but see my comment about restricted operating times for a few bridges. There are reasonable semi-secure offside moorings at Litherland and a huge Tesco next door, but I wouldn't want to go beyond that unless I was going right down to the docks. Beyone Litherland it is not particularly interesting, very weedy and more plastic than water in the canal! Litherland is a dump but the natives seem reasonably friendly.

I think Liverpool would be an August visit anyway for us so no bother at the minute..
might head for ellesmere, have to be cautious though of the man that steals boats in the night... a sinister soul who thinks none about beating of women.

Hi, All these reports are from 9 and 10 years ago, any chance of something a bit more recent instead of this “cut and paste piffle”. only just found this thread and may be repeating myself BUT I was broken into at Alrewas Oct 2019, batteries, generator, and other practical stuff, defo boaters knew what they doing. Obviously this is a BLIGHTED area which others should be aware off, shame there are good moorings and then straight into a pretty village with all the facilities needed.

I don't know why we should but we seem to expect better of boaters, so somehow, it seems to hurt more, when it so obviously was.

Sorry, couldn't resist.. Think its going to be the Caldon now, looking at the map can move the boat up that way and get the train back easy enough. did the Caldon a couple of years ago, worth doing IMO its is a pretty under used section of the canal part of which is a river (very small section nothing to worry about), some very narrow sections, you need to get out of the suburbs of Hanley, which is ruff, after that you step back in time. Moorings can be difficult and you have to go to the end before you can wind your boat to come back, I dont remember seeing any other points to wind but in for a penny.
