If Dad wants to replace his 'room companion' L A Café in Manila is highly recommended. All you have to do it buy a large pitcher of beer, instant company is guaranteed. More than that, it's one of the few places when companionship is free or at least, it always was every time I went there. The girl always seems to be called Sue which is strange, but there you go. And the boys?

I have been propositioned all over the Philippines, its a compliment when you look like me! Most of mine are on Negros and called Honey.

Most of mine are on Negros and called Honey. Just in case anyone isn't aware, 'Negros' is an island in the Philippines rather than being a racial slur. Manila is the only place I've been to where it's impossible to tuck into a McDonalds without being eyed up and eventually propositioned. Maybe the strangest place I was propositioned was on a track in the middle of nowhere. I was attempting to 'do' the brown hills of Bohol freelance, rather than on a guided tour. I was lost, nobody around but then a girl appeared from behind a rock, clad in the customary black mini skirt "Hi honey, where are you from?" As for the boys, yes, there's a large gay area just round the corner from L A Café, had a couple of good nights out there.

We have always avoided Manila but he got stuck there on the way out when they shut the airport. Negros Occidental is our usual stomping ground, Bacolod down to Sipalay, some stonking beaches. The natives are friendly, some more than you can cope with!

This all reminds me of one of the songs I enjoy listening to.
I've never been further east than Hurgharda (as a 12 year old) so no idea really..
ETA I do know that Manila is a type of rope.

I'm wondering whether it might be a quietish place, mostly divers there. I might be wrong, that might have been a place on Cebu. If it's where I remember I spent 4 days staying with a girl I met on a ferry, she was from one of the French Caribbean islands. 4 days, got absolutely nowhere, in sharp contrast to every single Filippina girl whose interest I went along with in the 4 months I spent there. Crazy place, terrible food, cheap beer, great live music, warm and friendly people, if a little mad. I remember staying on the island closest to Manila, can't remember its name. Hotels were really expensive I ended up bunking up with a family for free, I just had to buy all the food. There were 8 of us in total but meals were made for 9, the 9th person was a doll's house. Dutifully, the 2 daughters would take it in turns to visit me on alternate nights seemingly without any jealousy, and no question of any payment being involved.

Sipalay City! even got a tiny airport now. 100 miles from Bacolod on Negros Occ. Not a divers resort, that's a bit further south, but a peaceful Filippine town, 2 hotels, fantastic beach. We spend a lot of time near there on Sugar Beach, mainland but no road so you get there by boat. [ suspect that the road will get there soon and ruin it, they are bridging the creek ] 4 kilometres of clean sandy beach, quiet, clean, warm. Yes, its easy to really live in the Philippines! A bit too much sometimes!

A bit too much sometimes! Sugar Beach, pretty sure I went there! It was a place only accessible by boat with a rustic eco type resort owned by a European. Swiss? I only stayed 3 nights, I was on my own, the others staying there were lovey dovey couples. I got a bit bored with it, but it would be a lovely place to spend time with friends or whatever. I went to Boracay at some stage which was horrible. It's funny how sometimes the most horrible places are the most popular. Palawan was nice but despite the dusty 4 hour ride up north in a battered mini bus was already suffering because of too many tourists. I'd imagine it would have been amazing 30 years ago.

There are a few more small resorts on the north end of the beach now, all still low key. We stay in comfortable self contained bungalows, good food. As you say mostly Swiss, some French Swiss, some German Swiss, good standards. A divers school. No motorised transport. Did Boracay once by mistake, wrong plane, never again. Palawan was fabulous 16 years ago, now El Nido is manic, expensive, polluted. sea full of huge jellies. We go south where no tourists go, Nara, Brooks Point. They have roads now! The island capital, Puerto Princesa is a good shopping place, now far too many B&Bs. At least the electricity stays on most of the time, but supply water is a worry.

What a week of change!
Dad will be on his way home this month, at last. No firm date yet. He will be on his own, established that last week.
He met a guy who has lived in Manila airport for 132 days so far, it must have been horrible. He had no money and no support from abroad so he was stuck. The staff and the Dept of Tourism have been feeding him. Dad said he looks OK, desperately in need of a haircut and beard trim.
And as he comes home I get posted. Middle East, for obvious reasons. Not looking forward to it, situation is bad, living conditions will be rough but I get used to that. I have to go where my paymasters send me.
I will be missing for a while, won't have facilities or time for the internet for private use, the satellite system is strictly work only. I will try to get dad to go back on a forum, he will not use CWDF under any circumstance.

Glad it seems the problem is being sorted and he will be returning soon ...... He would be welcome here but he needs to accept that if someone thinks he has made a twattish remark, he will be called a twat. Most of us on here have received that accolade and there is nothing personal in it. It is a legacy of the Twatmaster General ...... Tomsk
