I am currently doing research into the possible whereabouts of 20 to 40 flat bottom boats (sailing barges) from Friesland in the Netherlands called Skûtsjes; commonly known as Dutch barges or Schuyts in English. These historical vessels came to England in the past and are most likely to be found somewhere in the London area, probably on or close to the Thames. They are ideal as floating homes. I receievd a tip from a London Boater that there are a number of skutsjes moored in various places.
It is of great importance to our Foundation to discover where these historical boats are or have been in the past, who have been the owners and where did they come from? We are really interested in our heritage and I would really appreciate any help you would be able to provide, no matter how trivial it may seem.

There is one in Rickmansworth on the Grand Union which belongs to my cousin.
If I can find her phone number I could probably get some details as I think they do have a bit of history with the boat.
There are some on the Thames but not being a particular fan of this type of boat i don't usually look too carefully at the Dutch sailing barges and I know the Skutjes are a bit different to some of the other sailing boats. They seem to be lower profile and I think the mooring bollards are different at the stern.
Happy to keep an eye out and post on here if I see any.
ETA is this about Dutch sailing barges in general or specifically Skutjes?
I believe they are a subtype of Tjalk and they sail faster so many of them were converted at great expense to pleasure racing barges.
If it's Dutch sailing barges in general I could probably get quite a list going once I am boating more when the river comes down a bit.

Your cousin's boat details would certainly help my research, especially the original registered number which is the side of the boat 2/3 from the back. I have all the numbers (143 were built) and then I could see if it has the original name and who built it. I am soecifically looking for the 'lost' 20 skutsjes. Any help at all would be great

I will look out for these boats brian and let you know on this thread if I get any details. Also time I phoned my cousin anyway as have not spoken to her for a while so should be able to get her boat number with any luck. It's worth having a look on apolloduck as well to get locations.

This one is on the tideway near tower bridge. Not very accessible to inspect for numbers but maybe a message to the seller? m.apolloduck.com/boat/barges-skutsje/394505Boat called "Mooi Maisga" apparently. Previously used for racing.

Indeed they are but generally very low headroom which is why I don't like them as a potential boat to own. Nice boats to see around though.
Raising the cabin would spoil the lines.

I wondered about this. Might be a better approach to just slice the head off that would stop the worrying.
That's exactly what my friend tells me when I moan about being too tall. He is quite a short old git.
The cutting legs not the head thing.
