Has anyone actually seen any evidence of shop shelves being cleared out ? Certainly the supermarkets we've been in, there's been no evidence at all. Or is it just London again representing the UK's news ? Rog yes.
we have a medium size co-op in the vicinity and also a corner shop run by Indians which is supplied by the co-op.
the larger store has empty shelves including ibuprofen and paracetamol, whilst the corner chop is stacked out.
when I discussed this with the manager of the corner shop he told me that co-op stock management is pathetic.
Actually, it's a very good system if the management know how to fully use it. The little corner shop owner will have no idea of our systems because his will be different. Stores can't legislate for strange buying patterns as they cant hold that much stock, if its known before hand things can happen. Down south over the weekend nearly every store was out of toilet rolls, hand wash and other bits. I've been in two supermarkets that were empty and photos on facebook show it's loads of stores around here. @gazza it's ok. Coop have implemented our bulk purchase policy of 3 per customer. I suspect people went in and saw shops were low and that encouraged more people to buy them. When places start running out it creates demand at other stores.

I had to hunt hard for the two pack which is all I wanted ...... they were lost in tyhe huge heaps of bonus packs !!!
as I wandered round collecting what I needed, I couldn't help chuckling to myself

Stores can't legislate for strange buying patterns as they cant hold that much stock, if its known before hand things can happen. I beg to differ. My experience with the latest panic buying is just one example of their piss-poor management. There are many items that are always sold out or not even listed in the bigger store that are ALWAYS on the shelf in the corner shop - it has been like that for a year, ever since the corner shop went into partnership with the co-op.
Last weekend I wanted a pizza for Saturday night. The big store had 2 'stonebaked' varieties. The corner shop had 3 stonebaked and 4 sourdough (that I prefer). When I ask the bigger store why they don't stock sourdough I am told because there is no demand for it and head office has taken it off their list. When I ask the duty manager to pass on my comments I am told that they couldn't do that - I would have to contact head office myself. Which of course I will not do - customer feedback should be invaluable and if the local management ignores it then they deserve to go out of business. It is not my job to do their marketing research on their behalf.
A few years ago I regularly bought Vogel bread at the co-op, then it went out of stock. When I asked the manager whether they could bring it back I was told that even if they decided the customers wanted it, it would take 2 years to bring it back. Holy Crap !!

unless I'm missing something - dogless is the only person not visiting the shops or watching the TV news.

Just back from Tesco - no toilet roll at all (not that I needed any). More worryingly the beer aisle was nearly cleared out. Outskirts of London (Buckinghamshire when I want to differentiate myself from the London riff raff ).

Thank you ... although I'm still struggling to comprehend the link between the virus and loo rolls Rog From what I gather, civilisation ends when the toilet roll runs out.

Not surprising as who would want to go into 2 weeks of self isolation only to run out of beer on the 3rd day.

Slightly confused, did you not read the first line. If the management know how to fully use the system. I also believe the independent franchise can order what they want, main stores do not have that luxury. If a line becomes a high waste line it is removed from the store unless it's a core line. Not much they can do about that, personally I would have got stock transferred in from another store if it was to please a customer. I would say the store team there are not very good, every store I worked in had over 99% availability. But then I knew what I was doing.

Yesterday we went to Mildenhall to pick up some odds and soda from a variety of shops and ended up in Sainsbury's......... we stood and looked at the toilet roll aisle and could only find 48 packs, another woman stood with us and echoed my original comment that we would be fecked if there was a war. We were forced to buy a 48 pack, more than enough for 5 or 6 weeks use. Hand gels etc cleaned out and plenty of gaps in Pasta and tinned goods. I shall report back after Tesco has delivered our weekly shop this morning. Phil
