You seem to be assuming that most unemployed people are unemployed by choice.

I think"people not wanting to work" is largely a Daily Mail myth, the fact is that there isn't sufficient work to have full employment now than manufacturing has all moved to the far East. If litter needs picking up, then that should be a job which pays at least the NMW. A while back Anglia TV set up camp outside Peterborough job centre, they were doing a bit on migrant agricultural workers. They asked several Peterboroughites coming out after signing on if they would like a job, 'what's the job mate?' Sorting and packing onions, NMW' came the reply, 'NAH mate, I'd rather sign on' Look around any shit hole town at the shuffling underclass in trackies that are fit to work but fail to do so.

But how can a person afford western European living costs on eastern European wages? In any event. I doubt Anglia TV had any onion packing jobs on offer, because onion packing factories would sooner employ eastern Europeans because they can claw back £100 a week from them in accommodation costs.

The point was the lazy bastards were not interested! The gang master thing is a different issue and not related to the workshy.

Any work in the agricultural industry is run by gangmasters now, if you live in the area you should know this.

The point was the lazy bastards were not interested! The gang master thing is a different issue and not related to the workshy. Well, let's take your fictional onion packing factory as an example. I've been visiting places like this for 30 years in the course of my work as an HGV driver. Thirty years ago virtually every employee would have been a British-born local living in a local village. Nowadays, there won't be one single British born person there. Now, is this because something has happened in just one generation which has made the locals idle and feckless, or do you think there might be some other reason for it?

Nope, you missed the point, they did it to highlight the attitudes of the long term unemployed to work in that sector, there was no reason for the lads questioned not to take the job offered, whether it existed or not is irrelevant, you wouldn't have got very long odds if you were asked to bet on the likelihood of them saying yes! It also neatly highlighted the need for migrants in this sector, no other fucker wants to do it,!

Any work in the agricultural industry is run by gangmasters now, if you live in the area you should know this. Largely due to the fact the local indigenous population are unwilling to do it. Gangmasters - the abhorrent fuckers that they are can't be excused their existence, but sadly, it's exactly because no one wants to do it that they have the opportunity to play a large role in our food production There has been some disgusting cases recently - I wouldn't wish that treatment on anyone, but, I guess it's the price to pay for £1 bags of onions and cheap lettuce!

If those on job seekers allowance should work for their benefits, so should everyone else who qualifies.
Perhaps single mothers with several kids who claim substantial child tax credits should muck out the local public toilets.
The disabled could be perhaps be forced to keep the local library going by doing 30 hours a week unpaid, with the threat of withdrawal of their personal independence if they don't comply.
Any pensioners on pension credit must work full time in a council tea shop.
All these things are ridiculous of course, as was the original post. The amount paid out in job seeker's allowance is tiny compared to amounts paid out to the groups I've given an example of above.

But I get what you mean. Something went wrong in this country, with the equilibrium between wages, rents/cost of living and benefits. So it doesn't pay people to work. There are lots of families with two people on nmw who struggle to make ends meet. Which is wrong if you go out to work you should be able to live a decent life. But rather than kick the people at the bottom, surely it's up to the corporations/companies to pay a living wage. Unfortunately this is where unchecked immigration helps the ruling classes. Which is why it won't stop anytime soon.

But I get what you mean. Me neither, but then again, I'm guessing both you and I have skills that mean we don't need to go grubbing around in the dirt to eek a living out! Not that there is anything wrong with being a farm labourer, quite the opposite, I find it incredibly sad that we now need to rely on migrant labour - however organised to produce food. In a roundabout cackhanded way it does demonstrate that some are willing to sit on thier arse and not improve their lot - young fit and on the dole should mean there isn't much simple manual work that is beyond a person - leaving agriculture to one side, how the fuck did we get to the point were every supermarket and decaying ex filing station is occupied by a gang of Eastern European car washers??!!

See above I added to my post kinda of echoing what your saying. Basicly I think it's too easy to kick the people at the bottom of the pile. Whilst unpicking the situation to really understand what's going on takes more brain power and time.
