No, . . it's just a shade over 15' beam, and around 30' shorter than the 200 and 250 tonners BOCM operated from Selby.

Trying to remember the beam at Torksey ..... but 30' shorter? hmm West country ? "Lincoln size" boats were built up to a maximum of 15' 3'' to 15' 4'', John, although the lock at Torksey will/would just take "Sheffield size" boats at up to 15' 6'' beam. The 'Selby' 200 (17' 6" beam) and 250 (19' 2" beam) tonners were all in the region of 104' LOA, . . so no, not 'West Country' size.

I knew Sabina was too fat for Torksey, but I couldn't remember by how much ....so Lincoln ? . . . . . . not Lincoln itself, John, but it is Torksey Lock, . . 11 miles along the Fossdyke from Lincoln, and the lock that limited "Lincoln size" boats to 74' LOA x 15' 3'' beam. The barge in the photo is almost certainly one of Furleys "Lincoln size" boats, and would have been bound for one of the mills that were situated around the eastern (Glory Hole/Stamp End) end of the Brayford in Lincoln. Torksey Lock has 4 x sets of gates, allowing penning when the tide in the Trent is higher than the Fossdyke, and Lincoln bound traffic arriving there from Hull at around HW on big Springs would pen down into the canal from the river with the tide anything up to around 3' 0" above canal retention level. In the photo there looks to be someone operating the capstan wheel for the top-end lock house side tide/flood gate, so there could well have been another barge or barges waiting lowside to pen as well. If there hadn't been anything else waiting to pen, they would have left the top-end tide/flood gates open and just closed up the sea-doors at the bottom-end instead.

You can still link to threads, just not photos directly hosted to the site. Many other forums have that rule for security reasons. Nothing to see here.........

If Tony had linked to the thread it would appear as normal, he didn't he linked to a directly hosted photo - might seem a mute point to many but it is why the error message is occurring.
