These are some pictures of my anchor winch. I have bought another anchor that I intend to dangle off the front and use the winch to lower or raise it. I intend to motorise the winch, so that it can be operated from the tiller. Has anybody got any good ideas? For motorising it. i.postimg.cc/1zN0qg7X/54165-E8-E-5-C79-4223-85-F1-CFDABADB0-D57.jpg

If that works, next question is 'Kriss are you using a laptop or mobile device?'

Nice winch. I think you might be able to motorise it using some sort of heavy DC geared motor and a belt drive to where the handle goes. Maybe using taperlock fittings for the pulley which would need to be mounted on the winch where the handle goes. It's going to take a fair bit of oomph to turn it but given a suitable reduction I wonder if something like this might do the job. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Parvalux-24-12volt-Geared-Drive-DC-Motor-Right-Angle-Drive-40-RPM-/233289829054I suppose it's not impossible that this might do it without needing a reduction. They use these gear motors on some of the mobility scooter hoists up to about 100kg so should be able to handle a hefty anchor. How to direct couple it is an obvious question. ETA looking at it you might be able to belt the motor output to the rope capstan end of the winch if you are only using chain on the anchor. I think it would tend to slip but might be possible if you got it really right and used something like a cam belt or maybe two beside each other.

Thank you, I was thinking of using a cog of the right size driving the big cogged wheel. I’ll try and put a photo up of the wheel.

Yes that's another approach definitely if you can get a decent motor and a matching gear wheel.
That would be the tidiest way to do it.

There is something like that at my sailing club which, in connection with a petrol generator, is used to hail the safety-boats in and out of the water. Its a two-handed affair. Use it as an anchor winch? There are many proprietary systems available.

I vaguely seem to remember a powered lock handle that was around a few years back ..... can anyone remember it and any details? something on that principle might work as it would use the existing gearing on the winch as well

I think it would be much more satisfying and effective to make a new handle. How often is the anchor going to be used anyway? It could look good after sandblasting.

Armstrong or Handraulic winches with a big chain and heavy anchor can be a challenge for all except Olympic weightlifters
