Can't help but wonder...do you need chain for the entire length? I could do with some chain at the moment.

Grab it ! The chain alone is worth more than the Ebay starting price, . . and, in contrast to the cast iron framed job you're thinking of converting to powered operation, the winch itself is designed and constructed to exert a near horizontal pull off both gypsies.

I was thinking of buying it for the chain alone. It is cheap.

It's more masculine to have chain all the way. Adding rope is a bit girly.

I'm not sure I totally agree with the last part of that Tony, Venturing out onto a large bit of tidal river where there is very little in the way of safe laybys, having good ground gear and the ability to recover it is quite reassuring I'm not saying or suggesting otherwise, John. What I am saying is that there wouldn't be any sense or point in spending time, effort or money doing anything at all with the existing winch. Any vestige of reassurance gained from that, if used as Kris proposes, would last only as long as it's relatively flimsy cast iron frame was able to survive the horizontal pull exerted by the cable through the hawsehole (bulwark) plates.

I see my comment was overtaken by events as well

Looks like I’ve bought an anchor winch and chain. Which is good as I’ve got an anchor being delivered this week. At least it will give me something to do, when on lock down.

Any pictures of your anchor kris? I like anchors. I know there are loads of modern types but I have a soft spot for the old Smith's patent anchors. In my little collection I have two. Both quite small ones one is a weighted type with lead in it the other is a normal one.

Nice.
I was told that the main use in the Dutch and French barges is as an emergency stopping mechanism rather than the anchoring as such.
They have two up front ready to be let go in the event of main drive failure.

I intend to use it like a supersize mudweight.
