Good old fashioned wealth redistribution isn't it.
Time for some light hearted predictions about final death toll?
8759 is my guess.

[. However the situation is made worse by the panic caused by the media. As time goes on and people feel trapped, the panic effect will worsen. Is it the first facebook pandemic? It's interesting how physical social gatherings have been restricted and pubs etc closed. Pushing people towards social media as an outlet for their frustrations. And people encouraged to shop by internet. It's almost like it's a big push towards "internet for everything". Slightly strange really.

Nothing light hearted about this Andrew but if Boris is right about 20,000 then that is an increase of 4% over and above the 'normal' number of fatalities in a year. No doubt this is a nasty strain. I wonder how many will die as a result of the fear driven by the media?

If it goes totally tits up somewhere and overwhelms the health service completely we will then know who is right and who is wrong. and looking round the world at the moment, the USA thanks to the Fox News/Donald Trump "news" service looks a candidate.
With their industrial capacity put into full action they could manage the situation well but .........

No secret has been made of why the government has taken this action ... purely and simply to STOP critical care cases swamping the NHS all at one time.
Makes sense to me ... other illnesses are still being, and need to be treated etc. a swamped NHS affects EVERYONE not just covid 19 patients.
Jane is convinced we, and half of South Yorkshire it seemed, contracted the virus over the christmas period ... sore throat and dry cough for several days ... but of course it was unheard of then.
It will be intetesting to see how the next two weeks pan out.

It will be interesting to see the standard alcohol related deaths and suicides figures. The ONS will publish them at some point.
As for light heartedness I believe being able to make a joke even of a shitty situation makes it better.
Maybe if it does cause loads of suicides that is a better outcome than these people, who obviously already have considerable issues, hanging around.
I'm afraid I don't believe in the over-arching value of life.
There are plenty of humans about. Some would say too many.
But of course the actual result will be a baby boom anyway so any increased death rate will probably be more than corrected by the number of nippers turning up around about next Christmas !!

England and Wales lose about 540,000 per year from all causes. With hindsight it will be interesting to see if this average increases in 2020, and by how much. But we still need to protect the NHS , and the vulnerable NOW and follow the guidance Rog

It's interesting to consider why people need NHS care.
For example if someone makes the choice to smoke and it knackers their lungs should they be protected and other perfectly healthy people have their livelihoods destroyed?
This is the point that trump has been making. Whatever people think of him he has got his finger on the pulse of the American people...

It will be interesting to see the standard alcohol related deaths and suicides figures. Pirkko said to me half an hour ago she is worried about the alcoholics. I said "Alko is still open." She said, no, she meant for their families, having an alcoholic at home 24 hours/day instead of at work.

Rog I'm sure that's so, and I don't doubt for a moment that this year's globetrotting strain of flu-type bug - ie. the Covid-19 virus - is a particularly nasty one with the potential to kill off higher numbers of people than usual, but I do have serious doubts that this bug, or something very closely related, hasn't visited the UK and probably most of Europe before. I am, however, becoming more and more uneasy by the day that the governments of a great many of the countries affected by the Covid-19 virus outbreak, including our own in the UK, are treating it as a heaven sent opportunity to test the extent to which totalitarian forms of general governmental control can be imposed on a population which has been thoroughly 'softened-up' by a barrage of Government inspired media scare-mongering.

I agree Tony, but only time will tell. Yes, lots of people I have spoken to on my cut short travels have said the same about already having it even from late last year. No scientific proof though.
