JohnV post earlier got me thinking, some of the best moments I have had have come about because we found something we haven't planned on doing. I will always remember popping round to my sisters for a sunday roast when her friend phoned up and said he was taking his helicopter for a service and do we want a trip. We ended up flying for an hour over hampshire. What great times have people had after doing something completely unplanned?

Divorced after 30 years, and surviving that by planning the boat build over a very happy winter holed up in a dreary back room bedsit whilst waiting for the dream to arrive. Spring 2010 one of the best times of my life steering my own kingdom, and for the first in my life taking full control of it.
It has never been bettered by anything yet.
Hah, I just realised it will be the 10th anniversary of moving aboard on the 12th April, I shall open a small bottle of champers Ive had in the fridge waiting for such an occasion.

There I was aged 23 dossing in a shit hole caravan at the gliding club where I was a βgliding bumβ with zero cash (on benefits, IIRC), when a friend plonked a form down in front of me and said ββere, fill this out to become a helicopter pilotβ. I did so eventually, after Iβd spilled tea and wiped butter on it, and sort of fell into a sponsored 9 month training course flying Bell 47s, followed by a lengthy career as an over-paid helicopter pilot. I had a few early career highlights including flying a helicopter from Gatwick to Singapore, a year living in Borneo and then flew same helicopter back to UK. Which perhaps beats an hour around Hampshire. Before that Iβd always presumed I would have a career as an electronic engineer having done it at Uni. But as it turned out, flying helicopters was much better than a proper job.

Keeping a bottle of champagne in the fridge for ten years certainly is admirable

Β But as it turned out, flying helicopters was much better than a proper job. I've flown all manner of aircraft in and out of active volcanoes and been to the moon on one of my days off. And never had a paid job at all! And none of my boats have any fake rivets. I think this probably trumps you quite comprehensively. And that's not to mention the MI6 voluntary. I mean just think about it. You have to be pretty good to get collected by MI6 on a non paid for basis

Talking of champers, we have tonight decided that the end is nigh so might as well enjoy the bottle of champers left over from Christmas. After all, you canβt take it with you! Hic!

1969 aged 17, dropped out of school, working as lab tech at university. Come the Freshers ball no one knew how the theatre lights worked, one thing I did do at public school was the theatre lighting. One of the bands playing asked if I wanted a job with them, I spent the next thirty years swanning around the world with various bands, getting paid and having fun.
