It's a bit naff being stuck on a boat when you like to exercise a lot. I go shopping by kayak now. I get some funny looks walking around Tesco holding my paddle but so be it. There's a tree close to me. If I stand on a dry stone wall on the edge of the towpath I can access a branch that's thin enough to get my hands round and, so far at least, strong enough to take my weight. I can do pull ups on this, one of the best strength exercises. I do hope it doesn't snap one day, 8 foot drop the other side of the wall.
Anyone else found any novel ways to exercise?

I suspect your the person that the Facebook faux outrage is about. The amount of people saying we have been told not to move yet people are still kayaking, is starting to wear quite thin.
As for exercise, there is similar outrage about cyclists too so I've not got the bikes out. According to most, cyclists are cheating the system. Using it to escape lockdown and are going to murder people because they are travelling and using shops that might be in areas that haven't been hit yet.
Yes I know I should probably stay off Facebook.
I am working hard at work so that is keeping me active and I am walking to the shops each day, essential stuff.
In a city there is not much else I can do really. Going to take the kids out on the scooters later.

Exercises and stretches every day in the boat ... same as always ... and a walk later. Amazing that towpaths are so busy ... we're wandering on footpaths and seeing not a living soul Rog

I dumped Facebook a while ago due to this sort of shit, I am also on a break from Twitter due to similar stuff, gets tedious and you find yourself getting dragged into it all...

A kayak paddle is a handy social distancing enforcement tool.
Walk along the pavement holding it horizontally. Do a bit of "air paddling".
How could anyone complain? You are well within your legally defined 2m protection radius.
Actually people should start fixing 4m diameter hoops to their apparel to keep others away.
There must be emerging market for SDEDs.
I did see someone yesterday with one of those white sticks blind people use. I don't think he was blind...

I go shopping by kayak now. Naughty boy!
Can I still canoe or kayak?
No, we have suspended canoeing and other paddle sports on our waterways for the time being.

That's because they don't want all the plebs suddenly turning up in their inflatable kayaks and falling in leading to emergency services call outs. It's still mighty cold in the cut.

yeah but he's using it as an essential means of transport thus avoiding clogging up the roads and furthermore he is able to maintain a healthy social distance and get his exercise all in one go.... well done that man...

If you could demonstrate you use the kayak for shopping in normal situations anyway that seems ok. It's a transport mode and a tender to your canal boat.

Rather like the fishing ban, I suspect the idea is to stop people GOING to the canal to canoe, fish etc. Clinton Cool 's already there so no contact is risked. Rog

I also go kayaking for exercise, without including the shopping bit. If people are allowed to walk along the towpath I'll continue to kayak along the canal, as my exercise is less likely to spread the virus than theirs. Yesterday I took the cassette to the services on the kayak, rather than upping sticks with the boat. To suggest that it's safe to do this on a narrowboat but not on a kayak is a ridiculous notion. So, I'll follow the spirit of the law, because my circumstances differ from most, so the letter of the law doesn't make sense.

If I ever swap my narrowboat for a camper that area's at the top of my list. Might be a few years too late though, I guess plod doesn't approve of ageing surfers setting up camp in laybys.
