I was only joking. My take on this, as I have said before, is that, yes, I think a few weeks of quarantine for everyone could be an interesting method to see how things pan out. If this virus is really a threat. But the whole thing is a joke with the Police telling old ladies on park benches to go home, yet letting drug dealers carry on as normal, and see comment below: "Close the International airports, the Channel Tunnel and the London Underground OR lift the lockdown on the public immediately. You can't have it both ways claiming the virus could spread if we leave home but doesn't spread on the packed trains and planes where passengers breath recycled air." Of course I see nothing wrong with boating, when supermarkets are packed with hordes of 'the unclean'. Don't forget to wipe the paddle gear after you have used it with antiseptic wipes - because as we all know, antiseptics do not 'kill' viruses. I thought you lived in Finland ? Yes indeedy - but our 'second home' is in England. As we put a lot of money into the UK, and my ancestors are all from the UK, I still feel entitled to comment on UK issues. I have always said that the UK is much more interesting than Finland, which is basically dreary, undulating landscapes of boring trees. There are an equal number of plusses and minuses between the 2 countries, I think. Things work here - go to Manchester Airport and the travelator is broken (has been for 20 years). England has lots of long distance footpaths - Finland doesn't really have any (and anyway, who wants to walk all day seeing nothing but trees in a forest?).

I thought you lived in Finland ? Rog Doesn't mean he likes it though, I think he's homesick. Not homesick as we go back & forth about 5 times/year. Interesting quandary now - there are all kinds of things you can do in the UK, and places to explore - and now you can't go out (at the moment) without fear of meeting a 'Policeman'. Finland is boring yet we can go wherever we want - yet there's nowhere to go as it's so boring. Planning a trip to a place on the coast in our village for sunset today, a spot I haven't been to before. I expect it to be rather boring. But the sunset might be nice.

Its quite a strange situation.
The UK government has systematically withdrawn funding from essential services for years. police cuts etc.
Now they may need these services they are in a situation where they might come up short.
So what to do?
Firmly ask people to self-police or risk exposing the basic problem of previous funding cuts and a chance of a total loss of control.
Interesting choice really.
Could the UK enforce a "full lockdown" like they have in France?
French people -are- getting routinely stopped when going anywhere, by men (police officers or gendarmes) with guns demanding paperwork.
I know this is true because my sister's mother in law has been stopped twice and one of my woman's sisters has had the same treatment. Both in ordinary towns not cities. On way to shops by car.
Does the UK physically have the capability to do this?
This seems to be the elephant in the room question.

Planes still running Helsinki-London. But what's the point if boating is out of the question? If I get too bored I might nip over and walk the Pennine Way - but then I'd have to sneak through Edale at night (angry farmers), and there would be suspicious looks at shops along the way. Pennine Way has been on my list for many years, have walked parts of it but not the whole lot in one go. Soon here at home we will have to start drawing up a plan for the next 2 months, to give us something to do in a sensible manner. It looks very unlikely I'll be back at work before August. 2nd June we have a flight to London - if it's running - and if we can get to the airport with 'Uusimaa' (the Helsinki region) being 'closed'. We have bicycles but it's far too cold to go out cycling - the weather might be warm enough by May. Got a car but can't go to Lapland as the locals don't want southerners visiting - and anyway, Lapland is boring.

Pennine Way has been on my list for many years, have walked parts of it but not the whole lot in one go. Here's the thing. 50 million people wondering what to do with themselves. 200,000 decide the Pennine way would be good, there are a lot of "walkers" in the uk. They home in on that thinking of the tranquillity and emptiness of the moors. It's busy normally anyway like a fookin motorway in some parts. Where would you stay with B&B and campsites closed, Edale car park chained up to stop people just like you, rampant land owners who AT LAST have the excuse to say "Get orf my land"... I did the whole lot in one go in the late 70's, more or less wild camping the whole way. Twas all then as you would love it to be now - crazy old farmers charging 50p aa tent then waking you at 5am with a big bag of free eggs. Cream teas in the middle of nowhere, miles from the nearest surfaced road...I'm getting all nostalgic.

Yes, wild camping mostly. I have been planning to do it since around 1982. No-one around when we did the East Marton - Gargrave stretch in June 2017.

At the beginning to look at a closed school and I kid you not on saw 12 police cars in a short 3 mile drive. I can only presume they are not dealing with all the petty stuff so are freeing up officers.

I drove from Berkshire through central London to East London day before yesterday and saw one police car on the journey.
It's moving fast so this could have changed in the two days since to be fair.

Some parts of the states, to save money, had already publicly stated that crimes of theft where the value was under $900 would no longer be investigated. On a separate note, where the US goes we follow...at least they're honest about that, we DO it already don't we?.
Now, they have said they will only investigate violent crimes. On the radio and TV. They chose to broadcast the fact. I could look up where that is, probably NY.

If I were dogless I'd only be travelling under cover of darkness: "Furious Welsh locals block Range Rover driver who had driven 115 miles from Sheffield to Snowdonia despite coronavirus lockdown" www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8164417/Locals-block-driver-driven-115-miles-Snowdonia-despite-coronavirus-lockdown.html("Meanwhile thousands of people still arriving every day at airports, not even a basic temperature reading taken, then all onto buses and packed trains home.") ("if all the public toilets are closed down it will simply make things worse because people will be forced to do their business in bushes or at the side of the road, causing all sorts of disease")

Just been out walking for just short of three hours and saw only 7 people ... all keeping their distance. Chilly but lovely. I was enquiring why you keep describing life in England naughtyfox with such critical authority when you're in Finland ... and your outlandish comments are based solely on Daily Mail idiocy. Rog

What does it matter where I live? We all live in the 'Global Economy' and are all connected via the Internet. And, as you know, 'Diversity and Multiculturalism are our strength'. (said no-one in Japan). Good luck in Wales!

It matters because you keep spouting nonsense about a country that you don't live in ... so are at best merely guessing.
Why not tell us about what you can see happening in Finland rather than rumour mongering about England.
And I'm not going to Wales or anywhere else ... if you lived in England you would know MOST folk are doing as asked and staying still.
In fact, just forget it.
