This is a great country and yes most people do want to do the right thing.
It's just the way it is. There is still some basic politeness around although people claim it has been destroyed I don't think they are entirely right.

Discovered (via fb) that Mountbatten & Jellicoe are finally (after eighteen months away) back on the Llangollen canal trading. Excellent for them and their customers And it appears the lock work is completed. Rog

Nice boats they are too. I remember Ivor Bachelor moored by Braunston turn just with Mountbatten in the mid nineties before he got hold of Jellicoe. Ex truck driver he was. I used to buy coal from him and natter about things. He always used to say "well I can't stand here, chatting all day" and then carry on chatting anyway. Not sure if he's still about. The other chatty bloke around there was Ernie Kendall on Poacher by the marina. He was a funny man, the genuine article and he was into getting stuff out with the magnet. My hero. Long gone now. Happy days on the cut

Last time we saw Ivor he was working for C&RT and was on Harecastle tunnel duty ... logging boats in at Kidsgrove.
We still call that first mooring by the turn 'Ivor's mooring' although it must be twenty years since he left.

He gave me some very good advice about not choosing to be a welder as a trade. Due to the inhalation of noxious gases.
No idea how I presented at the time, as a posh but very scruffy 20 year old talking non stop ! Possibly rather similar to my current presentation as a posh very scruffy 45 year old talking non stop !
Oh dear.

Ernie Kendal May have been one of the first to realize the earning potential of dredging with a magnet. Most nights he went up the flight magnetising as he called it getting a collection of windlass, mooring pins and assorted tools etc which he sold from the boat. Always cheerful and was a big help to me when we brought the Tadworth . He and Arthur were never critical but would sort of suggest things and I would go down and find that the fenders had been put right or cloths rolled up tighter, Arthur would say sent Ernie along to sort things out, meant well and much appreciated. Lovely man and still watching the boats from the cemetery.

Happy days on the cut Ivor and Mel bought another boat (can't remember the name, sorry) and lived on it for another few years but have now moved ashore in Lincolnshire, I believe. Proper acerbic boating people. Hope they're ok. eta - have yet to meet a working boatman (and his long suffering woman!!) over the last 15 years who "can't stand there chatting all day" - and you still can't get away ...… Hope they're keeping safe and well.

Richard and Ruth have taken over the working pair - very pleasant, helpful and accommodating.
Wish them well - it hasn't been easy for them so far.

Very true metanoiaLast time I did Claydon locks Jane was locking, and I was on the boat and we met Ian and Alison formerly off Gosty Hill the coal boat, and a pal of theirs walking the dogs. Ian stayed alongside me ALL the way down the flight, chewing the fat, despite t'others walking on ahead I think it's part of the job spec'. Rog

Rog LOVED that couple and SO feel for the poor long suffering Alison. Iced in back in 2008 and he promised to deliver - did what he said - although it was after 10pm by the time he got there. Hour long conversation about how he would breast up in the morning ........... Think Bosun may no longer be with us and I never knew the new one's name. Happy Days!

Yes indeed ... a bad couple of years to try and start a waterway business ... ask our own lovely Mark quaysider . It'll get better ... won't it ? Rog Tell that to hmrc - the lovely announcement about "helping the self employed" - is all well and good if you've got to the point of actually making a "profit" - ... I'm a bit sick of 'well meaning' folks saying things like "oh you'll be able to get help now" or "have you tried the grants scheme" or "can't you get a business continuity loan?" or any other pointless (unintentionally I accept) statements... The reality here on 'Ellis' is this. Started the business with 11 bookings for the first year - hampered by the drought and Marple flights meaning had to cancel /delay 2 of them... ergo, END Of year 1 = LOSS (ok I had redundancy money to live off) Year 2 - just coming to the end (5th April to keep in simple) - probably break even ... ie Still NO profits but self sustaining by the skin of my teeth. Year 3 - killed by Covid before it began - CRT have phoned and cancelled all my booked passages (basically in and out of Liverpool and Standedge tunnel twice) until 30th June... That looks like we are not able to go anywhere until then at least. Still - I can get hold of enough credit to keep going this year but it's going to take some clawing back from ... already having take a loan over 5 years to pay for the divorce settlement to keep what I already paid for once anyway...

Rog .. already having take a loan over 5 years to pay for the divorce settlement to keep what I already paid for once anyway... This is what I don't understand. Surely Andy should have left the relationship with only what was his? Any chance of an explanation? You will just have to think of Robert the Bruce and the Spider, and have another go when the Covid-19 situation is over. How about parking the boat up somewhere and finding another job for a while? I thought you said you were thinking of bringing the boat 'down South' to the Midlands (or even to the K&A?) where the canals are more likely to be least closed from failings? You can take comfort in the fact that thousands of other people have been unceremoniously laid off / kicked out of their jobs, you are not the only one. CRT should be refunding a chunk of your licence(s) if you can't go anywhere (at their request)?

NEXT year (well at the end of this year) the plan is to spend most of it on the Llangollen and HNC - followed by a trip down to Market Harborough and then start down there the year after...

If Andy has taken a chunk of what is 'morally' yours, then that's just 'not on' in my opinion. Pirkko and I pay half-and-half for nearly everything, so even if there was a big bust-up she couldn't say I've taken her money, neither could I say the same of her. My things are mine, her things are hers. She's making her Will this week (getting old anyway) and asked me to look through it, and I made my own 'wish list if I die' years ago (updated every now & then) and everything looks straightforward and nothing to argue about. Exception is the boat - as we have jointly put money and effort into it, and not our kids, then if she dies first, her half of the boat comes to me, and vice versa. It is our project and nothing to do with our kids. Not planning on dying for another 25 years (at least!) yet ;
