Hi all and sundry., I spilt my G&T on laptop today, for some reason it's now very unpredictable.
So I'd like a tablet with good resolution for sport, and no builtt in ads. tx

I'm no expert on anything computer related but hopefully some one can help. I brought one of those smaller lightweight notepad things but I haven't got on with it..suspect its because apple have ensnared me. However got to soon as my apple macbook air is limping towards its demise.

It all depends on what you call 'best'. Is it ultimate computing power? Do you like playing games? Is price important? Personally I would want one with in-built gps and that single factor tends to bump the price up. A rule of thumb: the more expensive it is, the slicker everything will run. Its not an absolute given that this is true though, have a browse on ebay for some great-looking and totally unbranded offers. But the cheapest end of the market will inevitably deliver clunky crap. Make a list of what you want to do with your new toy and base your decision on that. If its 'send emails, browse the net and watch a film sometimes' the cheaper stuff will do fine. If 'geocaching and navigation outdoors' is on that list then you would ideally want a 'rugged-ised' item - big bucks though. I've never owned an Apple item but everyone I know who has one gushes about how good they are (until some scumbag nicks it). There are more apps for Apple, and the flashiest ones always seem to be 'Apple only'. Take some time. My final decision always comes down to price. I wouldn't spend more than £300 on an item that is so fragile! And there will ALWAYS be a cheaper better offer next week...but at some point you have to jump. Good luck. www.techradar.com/uk/news/mobile-computing/tablets/15-best-android-tablets-in-the-world-905504

Ipad, works with no issues, costs lots Andriod, works but can be buggy and slow down over time, or at least quicker than an ipad windows, its windows, say no more. Amazon, same as android, plus you have to pay for ads to be removed. Go iPad, have a look on the official apple refurb website if you do decide to go that way, save a few quid for just like new with warranty. www.apple.com/uk/shop/refurbished/ipad

Users of Apple products tend to be a tad evangelical...always were. I admit the refurb offers are interesting.
All items that depend on microelectronics get slower over time...this is because a percentage of the micro-components die...apparently there is a degree of redundancy on any 'silicon chip'.
Apple were recently forced to admit that they deliberately slow down their older stuff to encourage sales of new products. Very naughty.
Why are you so dismissive of Windows?

Yes, I might go for a refurbed ipad. How long do they last? I usually break mine in 3-4 years, with annual service and upgrades of £50-£100 . I play bridge so good connection is the main thing, will I have to re-progam it? I've got GPS on phone £60 from Three youtube and a bit of TV sport would be the biggest demand. I use gmail, will an ipad transfer all my stuff will any tablet do that? I use a mouse with a wire. Does it have a keyboard like my laptop, but not sensitive to G&T? UPDATE £400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thinking £250-300

UPDATE £400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thinking £250-300 Yes iPads are expensive but you get what you pay for. Bear in mind some are wifi only, some have cellular data as well. Only the ones with built on cellular have gps. It will come “blank”, you personalise it and install whatever additional apps you want, a very easy process. Youtube and iplayer etc work well, but obviously take a fair bit of data. Yes you can configure an iPad to work with gmail, or just use a browser / web interface. If you configure it as an email client with IMAP, it will download whatever sent and received emails remain on you gmail account. It has a touch screen, not really designed to be used with a mouse. No built in hardware keyboard, a virtual keyboard appears when you need it. Or you can buy an add-on physical keyboard. Since it is just a screen it is more tolerant of spillage but it’s not totally waterproof at the edges where the connector and buttons are.

I bought an EE harrier secondhand. About £50 I think it was.
It's pretty good actually. The GPS is amazingly accurate even with no network. It's a real one not a Mickey mouse GPS.
Nice basic cheap piece of hardware.
It's a fairly small tablet.

UPDATE £400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thinking £250-300 Hi Socks, no idea about your bridge prog but if its web-based then there is no problem, if its a standalone program then all will depend on whether or not there is a version of the program for all platforms ie Apple OSX. Windows, Android etc. Tell me what its called and I'll see if I can find it. All the video and tv - no issue. As for email, Gmail is a web-based system; if you log onto the web from any terminal and input your details you can see all, so again no problem. If you actually download it to a local email client then transferring emails resident on your device could be problematic. Physical keyboards are almost always an optional extra with any tablet, you can get one for any device, similarly a physical mouse. If you spilt your drink on the keyboard only, maybe you can replace it. PAYING for a 'service' and upgrades? What bullshit is that? They've had some bad press lately for being Chinese but Huawei are very competitive. However if little or nothing of what I've said makes sense, maybe you should stick to Apple

One of those ones which doesn't work without internet connection. I don't know much about it but have read on the boating forums that some tablets don't have a proper GPS chip and need to be connected to a network in order to process the positioning information. Whereas some other tablets work as a standalone GPS regardless of whether they are connected. Maybe this is made up. I wouldn't know

The ones which require a web connection are not gps devices but rather use triangulation between cell sites to approximate your position.

That makes sense.
I must say I thought there was a type in between which did have a GPS but it was not a fully functioning one and required a network connection for the extra processing.
Rather than just using the cell network to do as you say.
So if it were connected then you will get a proper GPS if not you won't.
Or something but I probably got it wrong.
