Also, your 'wi-fi only' tablet can connect to the web via your phone, thus overcoming the problem. But it still wont work properly if the phone lacks the gps module...as the mountain rescue people will attest... ... although if you have a phone with gps, it doesn’t really matter! Surely all smartphones have gps these days?

I still think that some tablets have a GPS on them with full functionality whereas some have a GPS on them which requires network assistance. So for example crossing the channel there is a cell phone dead spot in the middle. The tablet with the real GPS would continue to provide position whereas the one with the network assisted GPS would be in danger of losing its position accuracy as it does not have the processing power to do everything on the device itself. Maybe wrong end of stick.. again No I don’t think that’s right. These days you can get a tiny chip which is a complete GPS receiver for a few quid. I have never heard of a gps that requires on-line processing to assist it. It would add a lot of complexity for no reason.

Maybe wrong end of stick.. again I believe you have it right now. But if you were on the sea it would be far better to have a dedicated device. Preferably two in case one goes wrong. I have read of many a sailor whose charts are 100% electronic these days.

Yes they had a deal on tablets pre loaded with Europe charts for from memory around £160 for members ..... haven't been on the site for quite a while, was going to check if they still did them but it says closed for maintenance for 45 minutes

How long do Ipads last - well, I'm just putting a 3 sim in one at least 10 yrs old, ipad 2, doesn't update anymore, but it's for my sister in law to join the modern world and keep in touch with friends and family while locked down. I have an ipod mini 1, it still works fine, bit slow but usable, problem comes when you need to wipe it, apps no longer work and older apps not available.

I have read of many a sailor whose charts are 100% electronic these days. I've got 5 different independent GPS units on 3 different independent power supplies. And the boat only touches salt water when the potatoes boil over

I get it now.

Needs a pc with a version of itunes on it. just done it with facebook apps.
