Success Many thanks, it was no heating, did exactly what it said in Manual, started immediately, very light smoke, on tickover now. naughtyfox, obviously the very light smoke obscured your vision.

Too much gallivanting and frolicking about the lanes and countryside while advising others to stay at home.

So what is the difference between what you were doing, and what you did to get it to start? As per this post, she used the heaters. As in 'glowplugs' I'm guessing. Has she never done that before? Has she never started the engine from cold before? I once went over to see if I could help a boy and his girlfriend - their car wouldn't start. When I looked at how shitty the engine was, just filth everywhere, I thought 'why bother? - there will be something wrong with just about everything else in that dark and dismal dungeon, and they have made no attempt to keep it clean and serviced'. Some people do no maintenance at all and expect things to run forever. As with the fuel filter - not changed since 2013?!

She has only recently bought the boat and mentioned that she had never actually started the engine herself, someone else had done it. She had it serviced because the fuel filter hadn’t been changed since 2013 etc.

So what is the difference between what you were doing, and what you did to get it to start? She read the manual! How long has she had the boat? Well, there is a lot to learn. I wrote a guide in case we ever lent our boat to friends/relatives and it comes to 7 pages of A4. And then I keep a 'service history' list - with another list of 'current situation' on the wall below starter panel which has relevant info to remind myself eg. when fuel filter was last changed, how many spare fuel filters we have, when was engine oil changed, when was gearbox oil changed, etc. We also have a comprehensive A-Z list of Where Things Are so that if I want to know where the fuel filters are I look up F (for fuel filters) and then I am reminded of where they are. You laugh - but - where are the split pins, eh? Foxy looks up S for split pins and then knows where they are! J for Jubilee clips - yes - found! How about weed hatch tape - where was that last? Duct tape, cable ties, Allen keys, Lift-a-Dots, snow brush, toothbrushes (for cleaning things), water pump impellers, fuses, chisels (which toolbox?).....
