Just for the OP - the places I lived in were very rural, I doubt Penzance is the same - it's still mostly a shithole though... I wouldnt choose to live in Penzance TBH anywhere on the coast is a nightmare in the summer.

Blimey that takes me back! I nicknamed that bit the "errr...SICK" Which the step brothers and sisters found very funny. In fact I saw one of them not long ago and he remembered my description as being very fitting. Nice place but very mucky.

Between the ages of 5 and 18 our fortnight summer holiday every year was at St Mawes, along with Enterprise dinghy and a hired motor-sailer day boat. Many great days spent exploring all the tidal creeks and rivers around those parts, and getting a handle on large tides at an early age! Lovely part of the country to holiday in, but I wouldn’t want to live there. I think surfing is more a north coast thing, isnt it?

The north coast has more consistent surf but there are spots on the south coast as well. Penzance would be ideal because there's Praa Sands on the south coast and Sennen Cove on the north coast, all within a few miles. My other passion is fishing, there are endless opportunities on both coasts. I imagine having a couple of boards in the shed for when the surf's up, kayak for fishing when it's flat. Bit of a dream really. On reflection though, as suggested earlier in this thread, I can imagine a 'foreigner' buying a house in a down at heel town might not go down too well. Apart from the hostility, it probably wouldn't be the right thing to do.

We love visiting Cornwall but it's full of bloody tourists.

I like Cornwall for a break away..not been for years. I quite like where I am now as its close to amenities but away from the crowds.. My neighbours seem lovely.. no where can ever be perfect but this will do for now.

I went Penzance last October, got to be honest I thought it was a shit hole...
I used to live in Plymouth some years ago, another shit hole, but I guess its nice as a base to get to the surrounding areas/beaches, never had any issues with locals although I girl I was in a pub with did once, she was from Iran and got some mouthy bloke telling her to go home, was just after 9/11.
Used to live in south wales also, lovely outside the valleys, but you will never be welcome up the valleys.

Cornwall, twinned with Norfolk is about the size of it. An entire county of inbred and hostile simpletons. Most are a lot smarter than yourself, and don't rely on a plastic doll for comfort.

Seaside towns do seem to be quite nasty.
I stayed for a few days in a house owned by my mother's foster sister in St Leonard's on sea. What a hell hole! She had to introduce me to the neighbours otherwise "they will kill you as soon as you step out of the door".
Nice people then.
