Ok now go easy on me here, this is pretty left field, but its been a boring Sunday and I'm stuck indoors, so my mind is turning to strange ideas....
If you have a few mins spare and dont mind indulging my mad impulse, I wanted to ask what you folks think of the pros and cons of a smaller boat, like this example at BWML in Sawley:
bwml.co.uk/brokerage/sm9659-freyja/?brokerage_form=full
These are the potential pros of a small boat:
- It can fit into more/smaller mooring spots at busier places when needed
- It can U turn/wind at more places that say a 60ft boat, and get round tight bends easier
- Maybe uses less fuel to keep warm because of smaller cabin space?
- In this case its a lot cheaper than a 60ft boat that is only 4 years old
(So presumably, as its so new, nothing is likely to go wrong for a few years yet)
These are the cons I can see so far:
- It has no dedicated bedroom- you turn the lounge sofas into a bed
(I dont mind that, although I can see why many people would not like it at all)
- Almost no storage space
This is the huge downside for me. There looks to be a bit of storage under the bench seats, and you could create some under the breakfast bar opposite the galley, but there's nothing else I can see.
Now I can imagine you need to keep a fair amount of pretty essential stuff on a boat (apart from the stuff I already know about, like spare clothes, a suitcase for trips, a guitar and speaker, some gadgets maybe, some paperwork).
I imagine you need a decent toolset, a genny, a petrol can, spare wellies, a big coat for winter cruising, spare parts for things that might go wrong- in truth I cant even begin to get a useful list together.
So do you think its possible to squeeze the essentials for normal boat life into the space this thing has? I dont mind renting a storage unit, or just ditching stuff I cant fit into a boat.
But is this a squeeze to far to be usable as a permanent CC liveaboard?
Am I losing my few remaining marbles?
