Not to clog up another thread I just thought I'd ask if there are any radio anoraks about.
I've decided what I want is a light-as-possible receive only handheld radio which would be on marine channel 14. With an earpiece.
Then I could just have it in pocket when on boat on the tideway and have all transmissions clearly rather than blaring out the fixed VHF radios. They would be on but quieter which means things could be missed.
Anyone any idea what radio to use? Would it have to be a marine VHF or can you pick it up on a normal radio somehow?

If you already have a mains VHF can't you get a simple repeater set to listen in ?
Sorry not very technical but have used repeaters in a former life.

Marine handheld with an earpiece. I suppose so yes I was just thinking of trying to get the size down to an absolute minimum so it would sit in a pocket.

I wonder if wireless earpiece might work for this. Never thought about it before but I suppose using modern technology would make sense.

It also covers the PMR bands and 2m/70cms bands but you'd need a licence for that to Tx.

What audio outputs have you on the main VHF set? Yes it has got external speaker and loud hailer options. I would like this system to be totally independent of the boats existing radios and power supplies. Something I can listen to privately while social distancing off the boat. Just to keep an ear on what is happening It's much more interesting than the news these days. I'm sure there must be a miniature system which would do this. They do tiny little radios but I don't think they go far enough out of the "centre of the dial".

not bad little units, I've had one for a few years. The ability to use AA batteries in an emergency is handy The menu is not very user friendly and it has facilities which are of no use to man nor beast but still a decent little robust unit. with a good reception/transmission range for a handheld and a decent quality of audio
