FYI this is an email I got from Ed when I asked about TP servicing in 2016:
Hi Nick.
Assume you have the later Iskra alternator with the internal fan? As a general rule I recommend 2-3000 hrs for the earlier Bosch unit and 3-4000 hrs for the later Iskra. Having said that I've seen untouched Bosch still running with over 10k hours and Iskra with failed rear bearing which looked like new and must have had less than 500hrs! Feel awkward recommending TP alternator servicing as some boaters think you're looking for work & typically I end up servicing an alternator when someone calls with TP problem which is normally brush/slipring connection fault.
For the time being it's worth removing the alternator and seeing if bearings are nice and smooth with no play - if you're pracitcal you can do this yourself. It's really hard to feel for play in the back bearing when moving the front pulley - best to remove the brush box and plastic cover on the back of the alternator and check from there, gently moving the slipring. Rear bearing failure is more common than front. You'll also see if the brushes or slipring are worn.
I have a set charge of £350 to change bearings & brushes (clear dust from stator etc..) which includes my time on the boat. If you were to drop it off or met me when I was doing a job in your direction I'd do for £200. I would always change brushes when changing bearings. Slipring most likely will still be perfect after 2k hours if Iskra alternator.
Hope that makes sense.
