Afraid not, when I was younger I wasn't really interested.By the time I was,it was too late-I was a rather late, unplanned baby.Dad didn't talk much about what he did but dropped snippets into conversations when looking at photographs. My big brother knew more, but sadly he died at a young age. My dad was much the same, and he died before I was interested enough to ask questions. However your dad's name may show up on an online database with some of his service records.

I will fly the red ensign in my garden in memory of the 39000 seamen killed and of the survivors who I sailed with in the 50s.

I will fly the red ensign in my garden in memory of the 39000 seamen killed and of the survivors who I sailed with in the 50s. I had two uncles and and a second cousin in the MN two did runs on the arctic convoys to Murmansk and one was awarded an MBE and a Lloyds gold war medal. I will be raising a glass or three to their memory

I went into the store and dug out my bunting, house flag and defaced red ensign (which was so bloody expensive that it only comes out on high days and holidays)

Happy VE day guys!
I think what Chris said to me yesterday is about right. Celebrate that we are fortunate to live in peace. Many aren't so fortunate around the world.
..and it's been 75 years since the last World Wa

That looks terrific JohnV. I'll put a photo up later but it's turn the boat day today ... such fun. The sacrifice of a generation permits us the freedom to be political or sniffy about the day. A brief silence at 11am. A toast tonight to their memory ... and scones for tea Rog

I have been thinking how I will spend the day dogless ...... I have a disposable barbecue tucked away somewhere, if I can find it, I might have a barbecue on deck in the sunshine and open a bottle of bubbly ...... seems very odd to do that on my own though

You'll not be on your own JohnV ... people all over will be marking the day in a similar way ... enjoy the bubbles they always taste better outside I think. Rog

Neither of my Grand Fathers bore arms during WW2
One was in a reserved occupation (he received several white feathers for doing what he was asked to do).
The other refused but still served including following the troops very closely on D-day (he also received several white feathers for his choice).
Both would be seen as key workers and possibly heroes in our current 'war'.
Times have changed for the better.
When raising a glass or two spare a thought for those that chose to support the war effort (without bearing arms) but still provided key services.
