I do wonder why the writer of the article seems to be so sure of the intentions, honesty and integrity of huge global tech companies. I think the worry is the COVID induced acceptance of legalising a principle when there is no practical need as alternatives exist. I think people tend to forget that bulk data storage is being done for the future, when the capabilities for trawling through it looking for whatever you choose will inevitably become massively more sophisticated, faster and more widely available legally or illegally. There is so much power potential there and though it's unstoppable IMO it's in everyone's interests to slow it down and attempt to limit it's usefulness while at least it's still debatable because it's unlawful?

Dominic Cummings wife is a director of the company that produced the app, they were quietly awarded the contract without it going out to tender, and they are also the company behind the Vote Leave data. I for one will not be using this app due to my concerns about privacy. Strangely I would use the Apple/Android app as its to late to worry since Google already know more about me than I do.

Not just the future what can be done with big data sets at the moment is frightening and as you say in the future it’s only going to get worse. Why do you think the multi national pharma companies are after the NHS? It’s not just to sell us drugs. But the sixty odd years of medical data from pretty much a whole countries population is priceless and unique. It’s that old panopticon sort raising its ugly head again.

I would have thought a fairly obvious problem with the app is that it puts you in a position where you could get picked up and tested just because of being in the same area as someone with the virus.
Phone location systems are scarily accurate but they don't usually get down to 2m accuracy in all situations.
So if you did pass within say 4m of someone else's phone and they were infected would the police immediately come out and grab you?
That's too nasty as a way to run a population. It's obviously going that way gradually anyway but it's still not ideal.

A side effect of all this might be that people might end up chucking their smart phones in the bin. Trust me I've thought about it many times!

I don't believe routing via a decision making central hub would be of any benefit whatsoever and at the very least demonstrates a lack of faith by the gov in it's population. What in effect they are saying by going this route is they regard us as sheep that need shepherding for their own silly good. Even the yanks have a better opinion of their own who are trusted to use their app without government interference. What is it that makes us apparently so uniquely stupid? Is it that we've already proved ourselves as a mass of people to be gullible sheep? I'd say yes.

TBH it's the tracing movement aspect that bothers me most and that's always been there. I don't buy the "nothing to hide" argument, if you have nothing to hide you don't need to be tracked and traced do you? It's a kind of presumption that you're guilty of something. I think it's our duty to do everything possible to thwart this app. The government do not have a good record in safely storing your info and nor do any private companies. Data is breached non-stop by any old hacker who chooses to so it's the collection of the data in the first place that's the problem...but it's worth BIG bucks or farce book would not be worth Billions - that's their only useful value isn't it? They would not survive on advertising, they survive by openly stealing everything that happens. Even our stupid ministers are chatting away on What'sapp, owned by farcebook, how else was Trump so up to date on Boris in Hosp etc etc.
