As I said a couple of days ago, I took a sneaky visit to the drydock in Hull while I was out re-stocking. There is a pusher tug and a LASH barge in the drydock. For younger members a LASH barge was a short lived attempt to modernise shipping before the ubiquitous container took over. Load Aboard SHip barges were basically a damn great square box of a barge ( 62 foot long 31 foot wide and 14 foot deep capable of carrying 375 tons of cargo) They were carried by specially constructed ships carrying up to 90 barges. in effect a waterbourne container, strings of these used to be seen going up the Trent. This one has been used as a storage unit in the docks and this is the first time it has moved for many years. The Pusher tug with it's totally flat bow is a typical type of tug used to push these. It is hoped that the hull is basically sound and will only need fairly minor work. If this is the case then the plan is to put a completely new deck, accommodation and wheelhouse onto her. I used to try and prise a bit of boat enthusiasm from my dad who's from a long line of Herring fishermen. They had some nice boats! No chance, complete bafflement, the boat was just a tool.
