Imagine a Hell where fish go fishing for hungry humans - how would you like a hook through the underside of your lower jaw and to be yanked up by it? Or have a hook pushed right through your tummy and out the other side and dropped into water so a shark can swallow you? Fishing is MURDER. Fish fingers for tea! Yummy! All well and good but have you ever been on a fishing vessel and seen how they get the fish for your Captain Bird's Eye fish fingers? I think I'd rather have a big hook through my jaw rather than being crushed to death (if I'm lucky) or otherwise spew out my guts due to the change in water pressure, or die from suffocation over a long period of time. If I was really unlucky I might survive in the fish hold for 3 days only to be gutted while I'm still alive. Anyone who eats fish but dismisses sport fishing as cruel needs to get a grip on reality.

I caught a 22lb carp on a kids telescopic rod at Goldstone Wharf on the Shroppie in 1990's. We were on a share boat (four of us) and my brother bought me the rod as a joke at Market Drayton. Floated a bit of white bread on the surface and caught a beautiful carp ... released unharmed ... jolly good fun. Clinton Cool wil tell you ... no good just dropping a piece of sweetcorn or whatever in the water and waiting ... you have to present the bait at the right depth. Besides quaysider ... what self respecting fish is going to want to surrender to a ginger , no matter how fabulous Rog Carp are few and far between on the northern canals. Over the years I've had 2 from the Middlewich branch and 1 from Bosley locks. Having said this I've found a place on the Macc where, when it's sunny, I disturb carp more or less every time I paddle through. I don't know why there are so many there and few or none everywhere else, the only 'feature' is large overhead electricity lines. Anyway, as soon as the lockdown is eased I'll have a bash at them, will report back! When the Summit level has been down for gate repairs, I've seen some huge carp in the remaining pools. Todmorden Anglers manage it. As for quaysider , just enjoy yourself as though you were a local fishist. Set up on a lock landing. Scowl at every passing boat, shout "slow down" when they are just pootling, leave your tackle spread all across the towpath.

What about the poor flies and maggots? Fish are very cruel too. They don't HAVE to take the bait.

Government want rail and bus services to increase from Monday....... (decided today - despite plans already in progress for an orderly increase from the 18th)
Apparently Boris isn't very popular at the moment in transport planning departments.................
We may be back boating sooner than we think.

No because canals arrrr not PRN waterways. NigelMoore is the man for this but I think he would confirm that the nav authority (CRT) have the right to physically prevent passage through locks whereas authorities running PRN waterways, which are usually Rivers, do not. As always happy to be corrected on this

There is no public right of navigation (PRN) on most canals. You use the waterway subject to -licensing-. Not the same on PRN waterways where you have an inalienable right to navigate.
If the navigation authority wish to chain up the locks they are free to do so on non-prn waterways.
That's as I understand it I think it's correct.

It would be good to hear from Nigel on this. Another member who knows about this is TonyDunkley who I regard as a bit of a wise old bean even if he can't tie a boat up properly. Hoping both of these valued contributors to the forum are well. I know they are both old gits. Always worth checking up on the old gits. Specially during the Med Panic situation.

Not quite as simple as you make it sound. CaRT are not obliged to let anyone navigate the canals sans permission (licence), but they ARE obliged to keep the canals navigable for those with the requisite licence. They can be sued in the High Court for failure to abide by their statutory duty, as expressly provided for in the relevant Act.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need another fortnight’s rest for my poor overworked enfeebled old-git fingers . . .

I always think of NigelMoore as Q ... you just summon him @magnetman when you need guidance from a 'boffin'. I'm unsure if patty or chagall would be happy to fill the role of Moneypenny. Rog

Our other female members might feel left out... there are also honorary ones we don't see like your Jane, Pirkko and Noreen, they might like to be considered for the role. Beware a clutching hand and sharp blade followed by Defenestration. (which isn't too bad a fate on a narrowboat.)

A very entertaining blog again quaysider thank you. But I must warn you ... Jane loved the story of you entertaining the 'little old ladies' right up to the point at which she saw there photos and realised they were only her age ... oopsie ! I liked the bit about the lady stepping in front of a bus to avoid being close to you People are very strange ... present company excepted. Rog

Hmmm. Our other female members might feel left out... there are also honorary ones we don't see like your Jane, Pirkko and Noreen, they might like to be considered for the role. Beware a clutching hand This one's clutching hand insisted on driving me to hospital - pulled a muscle/ligament/tendon/ slipped disc yesterday when I did nothing more than turn round in the forest. Painful spasms this morning and can't walk properly or bend to put my socks on. And I am supposed to be back at work on Thursday! Muscle relaxant injection and muscle relaxant tablets could be the first (and only) thing to do. What else can be done... just a matter of time to self-heal, really. And we shall probably get the dreaded coronavirus here at hospital... If you had paid attention on your Manual Handling course you'd know that you can put your back out picking up a paperclip. What a coincidence. Back to work Mr naughtyfox. Oh no, I've "done my back in" here's a sick note. Lazy scrounging migrant.
