How should the word "scone", to describe a small unsweetened or lightly sweetened cake made from flour, fat, and milk and sometimes having added fruit be pronounced?

Yes the place is as in spoon. My sister in law lives there. Also there is the palace and was the stone, not surprisingly they are also pronounced as in spoon.

If my Gran made them - Rockcakes If my Grandmother made them they were definitely 'scownes' and she travelled on the 'buz' when she went into the town.

I am appalled at the outcome of the poll, how so many can get it completely and utterly wrong. Bit like .....erm.....I'm sure there's a couple of things I could compare it to, but it's a nice day and the garden awaits.

They had satchels donated by the Social Welfare Action Group as well.

It all depends on who I'm with as to how I pronounce scone... normally as in rhyming with cone..but if I'm with the lot that pronounces as in rhyming with gone, I'll comply..

It also illustrates the intolerance of those who get it wrong, that you feel obliged to miss pronounce it so as not to be unfairly pilloried. A bit like... Erm... Best pop back out to the gardenπππππ€‘

I want to know how people eat them...
Jam plus cream or cream plus jam, not interested.
Do you daintily break/cut them apart and add jam n cream to a smallish bit or do you cut them in half, shove all the cream n jam in, put the top back on and laugh as the 'sandwich' explodes when you bite into it?

Sounds like a good question for another poll... I cut in half, add jam, add cream and eat as halves. About a 50/50 ratio of jam and cream. Some put butter on first, but that's just weird.

Lurpak butter straight from the fridge and sliced onto a scone is not weird, neither is a two inch topping of cream....as a nod to my cholesterol level I only spread a thin smear of strawberry jam. ...and Yes, I eat them daintily, but at speed before anybody comments about the level of cream!
