Would a Non partisan government be better for our big island?
I am worried about our current democracy as party politics seems very out of date and probably does not appeal much to the younger generation. They must cringe when they watch parliament TV....well I do and I'm an old git.
So how does everyone feel about moving to a non partisan system similar to some of our islands like Guernsey and Isle of Man?
The problem with party politics is that it pushes MP's to tow a party line on policies even if they disagree. Surely MP's should vote on behalf of their constituency and personal feelings, not some party manifesto drawn up by a think tank.

I've a friend who lives in Guernsey (born in London and a staunch small c conservative) - she envies our politics! You risk replacing party with mates/friends/people with enough money - exactly what our political party system tried to avoid over the years. I've often voted for independent candidates but have severe reservations whether it would work if everyone was 'independent'.

You risk replacing party with mates/friends/people with enough money... Why? The constituents still get to vote for their representative, so if they don't trust them they wont get elected. There is the issue that anyone who desires to be an MP must have a certain amount of lead guitarist syndrome (a certain amount of ego), we rarely get the shy and meek hold their hands up.

You don't get to be on the ballot paper without money.

Iceland have had a good idea, psychological test for anyone who wants to be a leader, weed out the sociopaths and general self centred power hungry nutters.

This would be the Iceland who owes everyone else a whole bunch of money? That's a different issue. Name another country that doesn't. Maybe Norway, where they invested the profits from their oil, didn't give it away to the already wealthy.

The Icelandic horses if they leave cannot return, nor can any 'foreign' horse come in.. The hills have these vents that release the heat.. Id like to go again...Its very expensive.. Apparently they also grow bananas in these domes.

So there would be separate votes on specific issues...like a referendum on everything...

So there would be separate votes on specific issues...like a referendum on everything... No the MP's still vote on policies in parliament as they have done for years, it's that they can vote without feeling they have to tow a party line. It also means that the pubic can vote for an MP who they feel will represent them rather than a party line.

So there'll be 635 members all standing on individual platforms without any common consensus.
Mmmm ... sounds great ... of course not good for getting anything done but a great club.

I’m with Rog on this one. Party politics has its downsides but non-party governments would never get anything done. Rarely is an issue binary, and so parliament would get 100 different options to vote for none of which would get a majority. This is why party politics was invented. The lesser of 2 evils unless your utopia is an entirely dysfunctional government.
