It seems everything hinges on the R number. Question?
How is the R number measured when we don't know how many people have had the virus (and could possibly be immune) and how many haven't had it (and could catch it )?
For example...
If an infected person jumps on a tube train with 100 passengers who haven't been infected, then that person may infect an average of 3 people. R = 3.
If an infected person jumps on a tube train with 100 passengers who HAVE been infected, and are now immune, that person will probably infect nobody. R = Zero.
The R number is totally dependant on the antibody test which hasn't been rolled out yet.

All that is actually going on is that the authorities are tapping into the fact that a lot of people are not very good at maths. Blind them with the science. It's all about the R. Not the XJ type of R although that is important as well but the reproduction rate of the virus. Just give them what they want.

A piece of string is always half a tenth of twenty times it's length.

Yes, I found the graph to be somewhat strange, with the "R" floating about neither on the x nor the y axis, and what scale are we using, is it logarithmic, surely not? Perhaps a good title might help.

Boris said the R is currently between .5 and .9. Might sound like a tiny difference, only .4, but it's actually a difference of either 45% or 80%, depending on which way you look at it. In other words they have no idea what the R is, but as the number of infections seems to be coming down, the R is likely below 1. All this means that the R is meaningless. Rate of infection goes up? bad. Rate of infection goes down? good. Simples.
