Hire boats are moving again today, I've had one each from Ashby Boat Company, Willow Wren and Clifton Cruisers come past today.

We're at Anderton and have seen half a dozen or so on the move and a few moored for the night here too.
It's good to see as they give the canals the "buzz" and "peril" needed. I know a lot of boaters moan about poor skippering by hirers but as someone who is travelling around (well, when the canals Ellis is on are open) quite a lot, I must admit to witnessing MORE poor behavior from the seasoned "I've been boating fof 40 years" (that 40 years been 1 -maybe 2 weeks out of the marina a year) brigade.
I have noticed that a lot of boat owners don't respond well to hotel boats - generally, with guests on, I take my sign OFF the side so we are ingonito but of course as the first guests are not due on util 9th August, I've left it on... there IS a difference in boaters demeanor when they clock the little sign . Don't know why, cause despite what Stabby may say, I'm actually quite a nice friendly ginger and try my best to rub along nicely with everyone.

It's great to see the hire boats isn't it ... loads of smiles and laughter.
Makes us laugh too ... last night we had one moored against the 'No Mooring' signs behind us and another moored on the none towpath side of the embankment.
But they'll be on there way this morning with no harm done and memories to take away.
A friend used to operate Duke & Duchess the hotel pair ... he always said he was a third class boater in most people's eyes which always surprised me.
I would have thought ALL BOATERS would want to support working boats.

I would have thought ALL BOATERS would want to support working boats. Rog I think that hits the nail on the head so to write - it's WORSE at water points... when I'm filling up with water, folks will come along and chat all friendly and boaty - then, when they clock the sign, something changes and I've often heard them going back in to their boat to wait their turn, muttering to the other half "god we're gonna be ages it's a hotel boat and he'll have a massive water tank"... That irks a little as I do have a quite modest tank (a tad over 500 litres) but fill up every other day so as not to spend TOO much time in one go on a tap... I also pay twice their licence fee, more insurance, have to feck around with stupid risk assessments (which now need redoing to incorporate microscopic viruses) yet still SOME think I'm inferior. Ironically, I probably pester crt an awful lot on THEIR behalf to try and get things mended when things go wrong and they are totally unawares. I know some hotelly operators try and queue jump cause they are on a schedule (like i am) but I prefer to play by 'cricket ruels' and wait my turn... ergo, I factor lock queues into my plans - the only exception being that run over the Pennines when I stood my ground when a couple of boaters tried bullying me into letting THEM go ahead of me. Anyway -

I remember an occasion many years ago at Glasscote locks, there was the usual summer queues and we met Dave on his hotel pair joining the queue.
We worked him down, motor and butty, much to the chagrin of others in the queue.
I don't know if anyone remembers the retired Vicar on Oak & Ash ... he had a reputation for pushing in and being rude and even abusive, but I've never heard bad reports about any other.

Rog I remember him. I watched him pile into the offside bank with the motor getting a smack up the bum from the butty. He saw me heading for a bridge hole from the opposite direction, then misjudged how close to the bridge I was. His brakes were either shit, or faulty 😂 I thanked him as I passed.
