Coronavirus & boating update, 11 May 2020
Hello Mark,
With the Government announcing a first step in lifting restrictions on outdoor activities, and allowing people to drive to spend time outdoors with members of the same household, from Wednesday, the Trust is lifting any remaining restrictions on boat owners visiting their boats though the Trust advises against travelling long distances unless it is essential to do so.
At this stage we continue to advise that boats should only be used for minimal travel. Angling and watersports (canoeing, Kayaking and SUP), for exercise, can also resume on Wednesday and we are reviewing when we can restore navigation in light of the new government advice.
In the meantime, mooring exemptions are extended by a further two weeks until 23 May.
As you may have seen before the weekend, we’ve created a survey to help us understand what your plans are for boating after the lockdown. Thanks to the 4,000 or so who’ve taken part but if you haven’t yet there’s still time. You’ll find the survey here – it’ll only take a couple of minutes to complete.
As ever, we’ll be constantly reviewing, and updating, our FAQs as more detail comes from government so do please regularly check back.
Best wishes, stay safe,
Damian Kemp,
Boating communications manager,
Canal & River Trust

I read that more as ok to visit and check your boat out but don't go anywhere, ok for everyone apart from boaters to actually use the canal infrastructure. No change for boaters who want to boat.

Just movement for services ... minimally ... no change.
But boat owners can now visit their boats.

It's hard not to deduce that they will play this fantastic god given reason to keep a bunch of locks chained up for as long as possible.

Advises against long distances... not prohibits.
What is it with "authorities" using words like: advice - when they mean instruct?
On the vague possibility Ellis can actually operate this year, it still needs to be WHERE it should be when we are allowed guests... ergo, as soon as ANY opening hours are advised for this ruddy canal, i'm getting off here and continuing - hopping from water point to water point as necessary to get to where I need to be.

On the evidence of the past few years for you, sadly you might be better off finding a stretch of canal most likely to remain open and plod up and down it with a succession of customers each summer. Cut the costs and frustrations and make some money for a while.

Cut the costs and frustrations and make some money for a while. I think the only way to do that might be to build my OWN canal...

I think the 'advises against travelling long distances' relates to driving to reach your boat quaysiderThe 14 day mooring rule remains suspended for another two weeks ... wouldn't be necessary if everyone could move. We are resigned to staying as we are for the next two weeks (which I think coincides with the L&L closure doesn't it ?) and hoping that thereafter we can move forward, services to services, probably up the Llangollen. Really we need to let the developing picture unfold ... and in any case ... you're in no rush to leave Pennine Cruisers Rog
