I've put a litre of redex in the tank, and dropped some into the inlet manifold. Set the tappets to the manufacturer advice and left it overnight. Started it this morning and seems a lot better. So I suspect you're right about carbon on the seat. I'll run it for a day or two and see if the snake oil sorts it. If not, strip down and repair I guess. and: I'll see if I can get some normfest or similar and give it a dose of that. Bloody isuzu parts are hard to get, so I might be looking at a new engine. I don't want to go down that route until this bitching virus calamity sods off. I wouldn't be in too much hurry to either write the engine off or even embark on a top overhaul. Assuming that the problem is muck of some sort on at least one inlet valve seat, and given the sort of use your engine gets - generally light load and low rpm - it's very unlikely there will have been any wear, burning or damage to any of the valves or seats due to the relatively low temperatures that inlet valves and seats run at in an under worked diesel. The problem will probably sort itself out after a few more hours running, especially if the engine can be given a few hours working a good bit harder than usual. If it doesn't improve, or does the same thing again after a short while, it might be as well to have the injectors out and get them tested and/or serviced as necessary. Worn, dirty or sticking injector nozzles can lead to incomplete and sooty combustion on light load even in the absence of any visible exhaust smoke, and may well have contributed to some excessive carbon formation in the combustion chambers and around the valve seats. Also, if parts for that Isuzu model are getting scarce and expensive, it might be as well to invoke Sod's Law to assist with cleaning up your valve seats by ordering a top overhaul gasket set and keeping it in stock. Yes, it's a 4le2, and parts are non existent. I've decided to run it till it's buggered and just buy a new engine. It's ok at min, albeit just a very slight noise, but as you said, it may well sort itself. Other than that sticky valve, the engine is still smooth and only uses just over half a litre an hour. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see what it's like. Thanks tony. 👍

I will on monday, I also have engines plus who have managed to get parts in the past. I'll do a few calls on monday to see if I can get anything.

I know this sounds like the bleeding obvious but have you checked whether one of the injectors is a bit loose and letting some air in? Also check for any small leak in the manifold or exhaust system.

Perfect example of posting styles, naughtyfox trying a bit of robust witty banter, poking fun. It's fair comment. The reply, well...🙄 I don't see naughtyfox 's comment as any better or worse than the stick he gets, eg Blakey, from some of us, oily handed migrant that he is. Best not go near dogless knees either. Oh fuck off jim you sad little leftwaffe pratt. You lost, get over it. 🙄 Who was tired and grumpy, posting past his bedtime?

It's just a valve. The injectors etc are fine. The engine isn't shaking or making a racket, just the hiss of that valve not seating properly.

You and foxy are just a pair of trolls going from thread to thread attention seeking. I've no time for idiots, so you get the reply I see fit for your stupidity. Now go and get someone to upholster that chaise lounge properly, it looks an abomination after your bodging.

Lots. 11000. That's mainly cruising though. Any battery charging whilst moored up is covered by the genny. It's a shame I cant get parts really, its been a good engine, and I do like the isuzu motors. Does about half a litre an hour cruising, and is very quiet. Not sure what I'll put in to replace it yet.

When you think about it, 11000 hours is similar to a car engine having done between a third to a half a million miles. Maybe it's worth getting it refurbished now anyway. Mine starts much easier in the cold and sounds much throatier. What sort of engine wouid you go for if you replaced it? Go hybrid?

I'll probably sell it once it's done and 2. as a liveaboard, electric or hybrid just ain't viable really. I think as widebeams go, we probably do greater distances with this one ourselves, whereas the majority only cruise small areas, or sit in a marina. Somebody buying it won't be keen on an electric or hybrid set up.
