As nobody else has bothered to answer and give you the chance to tell your joke... Why are there no telephones in china Stabby? I think folk may feel that they have heard why already. Actually I believe we haven't but my guess is the old "because they keep ringing the Wong number." Is this the right answer?

To be fair it is not "in china" but does contain a considerable amount of it.

I've a genuine worry that boating "up north" at least, will fade out... I for one have had it with the L & L - Crt blaming "drought" at the drop of a hat to close parts down ...I've only been doing this 3 years and it's happened 3 times so far.
This canal is going to ended up concreted over and become a really wide cycle path cause it's bugger all use for boating... UNLESS of Course CRT actually address ITS own failings - which aint gonna happen.
Boating will gradually be concentrated in the midlands/south, where the network is in better condition/better maintained already with plenty of water for no costs - The shroppie /staffs and worcester both being fed millions of gallons a day from the massive sewage works at Autherley.

Never mind all that, Quaysider - do you know why there are no telephones in China?

It always amuses me when boaters say 'how quiet it is' up north ... indeed it is, but I think because others are wary of getting stuck on a visit. Our last trip on the L&L was fantastic, and whilst we loved it all, we ended up having to race off before C&RT were closing it down. Fortunately we made it and I hope you do too. I hope it remains available to cruise for many decades to come, but it remains a 'vicious circle' ... unreliable so quiet ... quiet so unreliable Rog

IF it worked - it's lovely... hard work but lovely... above Gargrave being my favourite bit - and then again between Johnsons Hillocks and the top of Wigan... further along to Parbold too being lovely. IT's just the swing bridges suck the fun out of it and are forever breaking and the 'water' (or constant lack therof) make it as you say, a bit of a gamble...

Plus the Telemachus Wigan Flight Crew might have an effect. Not sure if volunteers at locks are likely to increase or decrease traffic. I'd say decrease but that's because I dislike them in general.

UNLESS of Course CRT actually address ITS own failings - which aint gonna happen. . Wash your mouth out with soap and water how dare you suggest such a thing? Whilst I agree crt’s incompetence and down right disregard for this beautiful canal isn’t helping. I’m thinking of their dropping of the level on the eastern side some 5-6 years ago. Which when when travelling from the fisherman’s to saltaire I would have to let them know and get them to put extra water on. The L&L had problems with water levels from when it was opened. Apparently there was a feeder from the summit pound to the river ribble that never got built. I can understand your frustration at trying to run a business.
