Our Thetford cassette loo is getting ready to be replaced ... simple system ... nothing to go wrong ... but the plastic is looking shabby and old which isn't too surprising, as I ripped out the Vacuflush about fourteen years ago.
Before replacing with a new Thetford I thought I'd look at what they're now calling 'dry toilets'.
I like the look of them, however I'm intrigued how they operate in practice.
It appears there is a liquids container, which requires emptying pretty much as often as my current cassette, about every four days.
Solids appear to collect into a bag, to which is added saw dust or whatever (if desired) but I wonder at what rate (number of days/weeks) the bag has to be changed ?
There is a small extractor/breather fan to vent the waste outside, but it doesn't seem to serve any other purpose.
The 18 litre cassettes last four or five days with two of us onboard, but if this time is significantly increased with a dry toilet, it may be worth considering.
I assume the dry toilet bags just go in rubbish skips ?
Anybody using such a system ?

Is this the same as compost toilets? I think we have an expert on here called tomsk but he seems to have vanished quite a while ago. Maybe kris can comment?

It is a composting toilet, I dont use the bags, because I use the compost at the allotment, My bin is a long time between empties months in some cases, I could never go back to cassettes or pumpout to much work and hassle for me, but its horses for courses isnt it?

If it were up to me I'd get a compost loo. Swmbo is averse, mind you my shit doesn't stink. I think there would be less pong - went to the boat yesterday and used the bog, it hadn't been emptied for a while, despite it only being quarter full and with blue in it it was foul. What would be good is a conversion kit for a thetford. peterboat, I too would use it in the garden, but I have heard there can be issues over the long term. What's the draw on the battery by the fan? Does it need the fan or would just a vent do. We need an expert opinion, it's a shame kris isn't more forthcoming. There is a Facebook group about compost loos, I noticed a comment elsewhere on London Boaters that it is possible to compost successfully on a boat but it takes a bit of organising.

The 'Simploo' I was looking at is just a dry toilet ... uses no water ... waste bagged and disposed of, but I don't know how long between empties.
If there's a gain in length of time between empties, this may be of interest as the prices are similar.
Obviously composting is a different matter ... storing waste for compost for 6 to 12 months ... and I'm not interested in that whilst cc'ing.

Looks like a bucket and a funnel with a seat. That sliding hatch handle? No thanks!

I prefer a cassette toilet because you can empty it down TellyMackus's chimney when you are passing and his boat is unattended.

The Thetford 200CW which we have, has been remodeled into the 224CW ... simple system with nothing to go wrong. Just wondered if anyone was using a 'dry toilet' and could report. Rog

There's a company near Skipton, www.kildwick.com/Home , that sells DIY kits, from the 2 hole pee and poo bowl to the finished thing. Not hard to build. A bottle and a bucket underneath, sawdust on the poo. Easy enough to bag the solid results in a stout bin liner and put it in the rubbish bin, perfectly legal, like nappies. Tip the pee in the hedge. It doesn't stink much, it's the mix of pee and poo that causes the foul stink.

Apparently you can place directly bagged shit into the domestic waste stream with no legal issues.
Most inland areas other than the @gazza one you can't overboard it into the water but bag it and bin it is cool.
It's the dogs.

One of the compost toilet brands is called "separett". Slightly bad spelling but one gets the picture.
Plus there is s lady side to the topic for some.

Dry toilets are brilliant and I would never go back to a porta poti. With a 30lt bucket and one person on board I empty the bucket about once every 6-8weeks. You use more sawdust in summer as it’s this covering that keeps the smell down and flies away. I wouldn’t buy a simploo, but I can’t recommend kildwick as it’s changed hands and got even more exspensive. But direct replacements size wise for porta potis are available.

I am using chippings with leaves in them, brilliant stuff I get it for free but it starts the composting straight away which means its quicker to use. I think I have been composting now for 9 years and noway would I go back to other toilets
