Yesterday whilst walking the towpath just north of Barbridge junction, we came upon a mole scrabbling about on the baked dry earth of the path. An adult, unmarked and uninjured, and certainly full of life, it was in full sunlight (very hot too) and appeared totally unable to get underground. A banking with a hedge and thick ivy undergrowth climbed steeply to the left of the towpath, and as there was no sign of any molehills on the path, we assumed it may have surfaced at the top of the bank, and rolled down onto the tow path where it was stuck. I placed it back under the ivy at the top of the bank, in shade and where the earth was softer. I wonder if anyone knows about moles ... not an animal I have encountered very often. I know phil70 is good with hedgehogs but wondered if we have any 'mole whisperers' who could explain why it was above ground mid afternoon ? Lovely to see the little beauty so close I have to say Rog

I know about moles but not allowed to comment in public due to the sensitive nature of the side of my neck.

Must say I thought moles would bite if picked up.
I know shrews do because I did once pick one up to remove it from dangerous proximity to a cat. That hurt!
Should have let it die.

We had a mole in the gliding club hangar a few years ago. Concrete floor so no idea how it got there, managed to shoo it into a plastic bucket and carried out into the field. Twas only afterwards I realised I should have been singing “there’s a mole in my bucket .. etc”

I saw a row of dead moles impaled on a barbed wire fence once. I guess it must have been a visual warning to other moles not to fuck with the land owners...

The only occupied boat at Wrenbury We had a stroll with binoculars between 9.15pm and 10.15pm and lucky enough to watch a fox ... then a barn owl ... heard tawny owls calling ... saw pipistrelle bats ... and narrowly avoided stepping on a common toad. What a magical evening. Rog

Ah Moles, bless them, anybody seeing one in the flesh is blessed because they know when you approach due to vibrations of footfall. It would seem very likely that it had come from the ivy clad bank. Mole hills only occur when the mole is buildings a new tunnel. Once it has a satisfactory tunnel system all is well and Mole just wanders along the system picking up worms that have dropped into the tunnel. One other thing is that moles are very good swimmers and in the event of the tunnel flooding they will swim to the highest point in their tunnel which is normally the "Mole Fortress" which is where a Mole spends his down time and where Mrs Mole raises the family. The fortress consists of a series of interconnected tunnels and chambers and is quite remarkable construction. Phil

Our cat I brought a live mole into the kitchen last year, they make a very scary hissing noise when they are displeased. We used our mouse catching techniques and released it back into (next door’s) garden, unharmed.
