Hi all Thanks for the reply's, helpful stuff. I've charged a couple up and will start doing some tests on them. Don't try to lock the thread down before we've had our full five minute argument. He wasn't trying to lock the thread down.

oh! ..... and begging will get you nowhere on this thread. kissing Magi's feet might be slightly more acceptable, however unpleasant it may seem.

The testers mentioned above are only useful to see if the battery could be used to start an engine. You stick a 110Ah starter battery in, you turn the key, maybe 400A flows for 3 seconds before the engine starts. That is 0.3Ah. So a starter battery just has to be able to provide a high current for a very short period of time, it doesn't need to have significant capacity. Whereas a leisure battery needs to be able to supply a modest current for a very long time - the measure of its usefulness is the remaining Ah capacity. The only way to measure that is by a discharge test. You fully charge it, you put on a load of known amps (say 10A for a 110Ah battery), and you time how long it takes for the battery voltage to fall to 10.5v. You multipy the discharge current by the number of hours it lasted, and that is the Ah capacity of the battery. The above gizmos are totally unable to give you any clue about the capacity of the battery, only its ability to deliver a high current for a short time. Been AFK for a little while thus the slow response. I admit the information gained is limited. However what both tests will show is the ability of the battery to accept and hold a charge. In the case of the second 'gizmo', which once more has been around for a very long time, its main advantage is that it performs a load-test which is instantly readable, unlike that two-pronged thing that I admittedly fail to understand the use of. And the message it gives is this: if after a few seconds on load test following a full charge the needle stops registering 12.5v or thereabouts but instead drops to around 10v or less, its time to buy a new battery. I reckon the ONLY reason you'd keep on using that battery is because of lack of choice.

Just as an aside really, when we got back to the mooring after our cruise, Sam's car wouldn't start. Flat battery.
I connected it up to my super-duper Numax battery charger and within 30 minutes it was showing as fully charged. So I said to him "It's fucked".
So we went and got a new one from Halfords. When we took the old one off, I was surprised that it had no manufacturer's sticker on it. We looked underneath it for the date stamp. October 2004. Obviously the original factory fitted battery (it's a 55 reg car).
Over 15 years for a car battery is definitely the longest I've ever known.
