Now we are creeping towards the daylight and the real world, something has been troubling me since March.
I am profoundly without religion, but understand some take great comfort and solace from the church.
I love the buildings, the history, the craft and skill, and the oasis of calm they offer in a busy, noisy world.
So I was shocked to discover that they were all locked up after the 23 March ... Acton church, one of our places of contemplation, even had notices forbidding the tending of grave's.
I would have thought in troubled times, the church would be a 'last redoubt' ... a place to seek reassurance, rather than closed.
Any thoughts from others ... am I missing the point ?

Best advice: let it be.

It's a deep one is this ... the Plague was probably propagated massively by people gathering to ask {Insert Deity of choice here} to make it stop. Fervent believers would presumably still do that, unless they play their 'It must be {Insert Deity of choice here}'s will - we are being punished' card. Some religions promote the notion that their Deity of choice is everywhere, so no gathering required except when some of the richest organisations in the world need a roof repairing, whereas others are more about group worship and the closing of their premises has caused some angst in those communities.
Edited to add ... and the British Public are so bloody minded it would only have been a matter of time before Churches were fitted with Dolby sound and big screens, or there was a 1000% increase in those taking communion, 7 days a week.

I blame Boris....
'1.17 Can I pray in a place of worship?
Yes, from 13 June, you will be able to independently pray in a church, mosque, synagogue, temple or other place of worship. We will continue to review when it might be safe to ease other restrictions on places of worship, including for communal prayer.'

Rog Plenty of religious folk would agree with you, but surely you can see it would be a hotbed if contagion if people were allowed to carry on as usual in churches (etc). There were certainly some nutters who still wanted to congregate in church being adamant that god would save them. With irrationality like that it’s easy to see why such people should not be allowed to use their own judgement. On the other hand, if all the fervent religious nutters caught the virus and died, the world would probably be a better, more peaceful and less judgemental place. So we have to blame Boris for overruling Darwin.

I like to sit in a church to reflect and occasionally Ive attended a service..not a lot so I'm by no means 'expert' but the majority of the congregation have been 'not young' and so I think they are nurturing grounds for a certain little virus.. In times of crises there are perhaps those who turn to religion for support who previously avoided churches.. So I guess like every other social gathering had to be axed...

As I peruse Google Maps often, I have noticed that churches have 'temporarily closed' added beneath their name; when I look now it seems to have changed to 'open times/services may have changed because of the coronavirus (Covid-19)'. For pubs it says 'temporarily closed'.
Nothing to stop you from praying at home, and you can always have this on in the background:

I can understand not holding services ... probably ... but surely churches (of all spaces) are roomy to the point of being cavernous so spacing wouldn't be an issue. And not permitted to tend loved ones grave's ... really quite extraordinary. I would consider, as a total outsider, that troubled times ought to be 'bread and butter' to organized religion ... that it would have been the opportunity to spread the love ... from a safe distance Rog
