The shiny area around the valve collet is where I contacted it with my finger when lifting the rocker end. It's not a mark from metal metal contact. Rocker has definitely only been contacting the valve stem itself. I think that the replacement rocker has only been contacting the valve stem, but from the wear marks visible (to the right) on the collar and the collets I reckon it's probable that the valve stem had worn a deep pocket into the end of the original rocker, . . and that's why it was replaced !

For the record the engines have done around 1700 hours according to the dashboard displays which do work. I think this engine has suffered from not having the vertical exhaust pipe capped. The other one had a cap but this one didn't. Introduction of condensation into the exhaust system? Not actual water damage as there are drains to take care of condensation in the external exhaust pipes but just some general dampness about seems to be possible. It's always smoked a tiny bit whereas the other engine is totally clean. TonyDunkley what would be a likely cause of rocker damage as you suggest on a low hours engine? ETA of course they may not have been new engines when mated to the dashboard panels...

Both of my senior marine consultants (friends) have told me to replace engines with a pair of new Beta 35s but I like the old BMCs and at the end of the day I'm only likely to do little trips to the Azores and back so it's not a big deal if they are not totally reliable.
I've got a nice pair of 'ores.

TonyDunkley what would be a likely cause of rocker damage as you suggest on a low hours engine? Who knows ? A rocker that hadn't been heat treated properly and was soft at the valve end, . . or a rocker with a blocked oilway running dry at the valve end, . . lots of possibilities. Plus, of course, the recorded hours could be post rebuild of an engine with many thousands of hours on it prior to rebuild.

Got the adjuster screw in and it's all running perfectly now.
That short screw with the mushroomed head was definitely the problem.
Have to keep an eye on that as the new one could easily be a soft one as well.
The new one is the same length as all the others so it must have simply been a replaced rocker which itself had the wrong screw in it.
Such a simple problem.

I have a lot of faith in the old BMC diesels, solid reliable motors. Yes they smoke a bit but they have a proven track record in boats. Glad that you problem turned out to so minor, happy boating.

Yes it was a pleasing outcome. Obviously there may be other issues but I agree the 1.5 seems to be a good unit. There are two of them in this boat and they are so nicely installed it would be criminal to lose them by repowering. The starboard unit seems to have some issues which the port one doesn't but once warm they both run clean with virtually no smoke at all so can't really moan.
Boat will be pointing towards the Thames estuary beginning of next week so will be handy to have that silly problem dealt with.
