So the toy trawler has an electric cool box type thing on it. It's small, perfectly formed, well situated and uses shed loads of leccy but doesn't get cold much. So I am now thinking of a freezer unit. Primarily to keep the kids ice lollies warm and obviously also to keep the beer cool rather than using their lollies for this rather obviously secondary purpose. I think it's about a 1ft X 3ft X 1ft thing. It would be handy to get input from mjg on this but if anyone else knows anything about these devices I'd love to hear from them. Budget is Β£4,599 today. This might change when the weather does. Using party ice from Tesco is so infra dig I can't believe it.

So mjg didn't delete his account ... wondered what happened to Martin and where he spent 'lock-down'. Keeping stuff cold uses electrickery ... I think we just have to grasp that nettle. On the plus side it's supposed to be ten plus degrees cooler tomorrow and drizzly Rog

I'm definitely not going to fit a gas fridge. Not space for one. My usual procedure living on boats off grid does not involve a fridge at all. I don't use them. However when it is really warm the beer needs cooling and sometimes there may be input from others requiring frozen fruit lollies so it's worth getting something really small for occasional use as a fast chill or freezing device. It's going to be either a compressor or one of those Seebeck things I just wondered which one if any was worth getting. Maybe Tesco ice is quite a good idea after all. It worked today

It worked today Work out how many bags of ice you can buy with the money needed to purchase a compressor fridge/freezer. Work out your bags of ice per day consumption, Divide that number by the amount of days you think you will need frozen produce onboard. You will then have your answer as to which way to turn. Alternatively forget all that faff, seek out an ice cream van and support a local small business. The ice cream van that visits our street does a delicious small 99 with chocolate sauce and nuts for a quid. Canβt go wrong at that sort of money

I will never buy ice cream from a van for any of my children. Hell will freeze over before his happens.
Plus don't forget the cold beer situation.
Β£1 for 6 ice lollies in Tesco.

Sounds like a you have had a bad experience at the hands of Mr Whippy?! itβs a hot lady (in both sense of the word) that does ours - sheβs spot on; again in both sense of the word! As for the beer, drag a bucket of Thames water out, put beer in, refresh every half hour, beer should be getting on for an acceptable temperature. You wonβt get much sleep through the night though.....

Apart from any other considerations I have never been anywhere near one with a view to making a purchase. I do dislike the whole thing though, perhaps due to some weird multi generational childhood trauma displacement issue. I still think a little freezer on the boat would be dead handy

Problem is, all of those peltier device coolboxes are very power hungry.
Not too bad when the engine is running but prohibitive when stopped. I use a small one when I'm on Shapfell (there isn't really room to install anything on her)
It does for me because when I am on her, I tend to do very long days and it's only to keep milk, butter & bacon for a day or two.
It is not very good at cooling things down from warm but is sufficient to keep things reasonably cool.
So no good for you really Andrew.
I would go along with Gazza's suggestion or simillar ..... an absorbtion fridge ...... they are much more efficient, even if you just use it on the 12v or 24v setting and not use gas.

Going back to the chiller/cool box thing I just had an idea. Ice maker. Produces 1kg of ice in 90 minutes* Draws 100 watts so about 10 amps /12v if used on inverter. Nice and compact and simple to operate. Seems an interesting option. Use the ice in a cool box for keeping beer cold and also have the option of iced drinks. Solar power would easily cover it as by next spring the toy trawler will have 1kw of solar on the wheelhouse.. Just set it on a timer in the morning so it makes ice then bung the ice in the beer box. On really hot days just leave it running all day and use the ice for whatever. I think it would be quite nice to have an ice maker. The main consideration is the small size. And at about Β£100 it's a lot cheaper than a good quality cool box. *ETA some do but actually this nice and small one which is about a foot cubed does 10kg/24hr so that's a bit longer. 9 ice cubes in ten minutes apparently. vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=132730523182&category=122929&pm=1&ds=0&t=1602576654000&ver=0&cspheader=1Seems reasonable and quite a good use of surplus solar power me thinks.

We have an ice maker similar to that one on the boat to supply ice for the G&Ts Works well, takes an hour or so to get up to speed (early cubes are very small). You will need a coolbox as well to store the ice as the ice tray in the machine is small.

There is already an electric cool box on the boat. It's just quite an old one and not particularly good at getting things really cold. It's a well insulated box with an aluminium interior.
Good tip about it taking a while to get going properly.

Well I think I've settled on the Alpicool C15 compressor fridge/freezer. It's just the right size. Nice and small.
Quite interested by some of the details especially these things
"The body of the freezer is vibrational resistant. It protects the personal item from getting crapped during the journey."
"Go outdoor, experience beautiful and make happiness."
"Alpicool is able to provide high standard products to cuntomers all over the world."
Seems ideal.
