Here you go kris... Two options for an ebike kit, hub motor, front or rear and a mid motor aka CD - chain drive. Legally limited to 25kph/15.5mph and 250w. Hub motors are cheaper, they come in a pre built wheel. So I'm looking at a pedal assisted 250w bafang 8fun CD motor with a throttle control, 36v 17ah battery. You still have to keep the pedals turning but without any effort, on max power setting. A doddle to fit, remove pedals and bottom bracket, pop motor crank in, fit new chain ring and cranks, fit battery to bottle holder fittings, and controller/lcd screen and off you go. I'm going to get the biggest battery, cheaper than upgrading later and better to keep the battery in condition. CD motors are better on hills and at low speed, because they use your normal gearing, the weak point, potentially, is the chain, but easy enough to carry a few spare links, there's a chain tool on my multi tool. It's possible and simple, with a laptop and connecting lead, to reprogram the controller and up the speed limit, but that would be naughtyπΉ. Woosh bikes in Brighton are very helpful, also pedelec forum, but there's loads of stuff on the net, controller hacking etc. Lots of cheap stuff on ebay but I'm going UK sourcing for guarantees and help if I need it. As for naughtyfox and his suggestion why would I buy a heavy lump like a Dawes Black Hole with a bollocksweat rotted Brooks saddle off ebay when I have an Ali hybrid frame with 700c wheels. I suppose one advantage is that it's inherently theft proof.

Thanks, it would be the centre mounted motor Iβd go for. But they are a little too expensive yet. Same idea as you really make an electric shopper, that can carry a good load of shopping.

Not ebikes but this is going to cause problems www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53219331Electric kick scooter rental to become legal but not privately owned electric scooters. What the heck? So it's ok to get random idiots on electric scooters but people who fork out hundreds of pounds to buy one will still be illegal. Surely something wrong here...

Oi, young flibbertygibbet, trolling my thread. Go and start your own. Otherwise print your own sticker, Hired from Acme Scooter Hire. Stickers are available for mid motors, swap the 1000w for a 250w. Appear legal, unless they get you with a speed gun.

When I went to Helsinki (weekend before last) I was surprised to see so many electric scooters... ...and the wheely-things like they have in Disneyland: No wonder people are getting fat, and more expensive toys that will eventually end up in landfill once the batteries are knackered, or they are dredged out of the canals. I see Noreen pedalling the traditional way, and Jim Riley in the basket here:

I had a mate who used to play golf ... always telling me what great exercise 18 holes was ... heart, lungs, limbs, an all around good work out he said ... endlessly.
Then one day a group of us went with him to 'his club' on a jolly.
He had an electric trolly ... no effort at all to carry clubs or walk about.
Aren't electric bikes similar ... being electric kind of defeats the original aim ?

Got two e bikes, (his and hers). Tried all sorts of combos, and settled for a vulcan and vengeance by carrera.
The bafang motors are rubbish, and have a very short lifespan. The hub motors are much more efficient.
I sold my first ebike a few months back, and replaced with the 2020 model. Home builds are OK, but they have a tendency to catch fire owing to the poor quality parts. You get what you pay for I guess.

Ours work on pressure being applied to the pedals via a sensor, stop peddling, and the motor switches off. We get an average of 50-60 kilometres per charge, whereas a throttle controlled one will be about 20 kilometres.

I've not come across "short lifespan of bafang motors" anywhere, had a search, no joy, due you have a link? Too hilly here for a hub motor, especially the old bridleways, whereas using the gears keeps the motor spinning efficiently. I'm not doing a home build, but fitted a guaranteed kit, so no problem there either.

We used to use petrol powered Go-peds to get around stadium shows, they were fun, totally illegal over here on the road but still good fun. goped.co.uk/

To see if it is workable. Yes but it seems to me to be the wrong approach. Reward "startup" companies who throw short term hire equipment onto public roads and pavements but censure people who spend several hundred pounds on ther own device and quite probably are responsible and may even wear a helmet and take care not to run down grannies. Wrong way round. Yes electric scooters are a valid way to get around but no don't temporarily legalise hire versions just get it sorted so they are all legal and preferably insured as well. I suppose this might be what is happening . See how it goes. In Paris they got banned pretty quickly.

I have an 8 speed shimano hub on my folding bike, I would think a crank motor would be better for all the reasns you have outlined Jim. But as Steve says are we sure the motors from China will have a long life?
