Whilst the phrase was first coined by Old Bill the beloved Bard of Avon, I understood that it was largely used as a nautical expression from the days of sail when small explosive devices were used in close quarter sea battles. A 'throw away' comment anyway ... it was the poshness of the raffia hat that prompted me to post originally Rog I understood a petard was a bomb, placed by hand eg. on a castle door, if it went off unexpectedly the explosion hoist the carrier into the air. An early form of suicide vest. Nothing specifically nautical about it. I doubt it was Old Bill who coined it. petard noun HISTORICAL a small bomb made of a metal or wooden box filled with powder, used to blast down a door or to make a hole in a wall.

I've read the book....3 times and I don't remember any of it...reckon takes a posh brain to inwardly digest and retain wot it says.. I've also got a hat similar to MM but I still don't make the 'posh' state... there must be another quality that has passed me by.... Which side of the cruise liner was your cabin on going out and which side coming back? That's the deciding factor for poshness. For my S America it was starboard out and port home..oops

William Shakespeare first used the phrase 'hoist by ones own petard' in Hamlet ... the individual words existed he just used them in that way which has become a phrase or saying.
Petard is indeed a small explosive charge ... they were used in sea battles hence my reference to nautical terms.
The phrase has come to mean self-inflicted failure.

It's worth being Losh rather than Posh. Some people are posh due to their situation but it's definitely not ideal and worth steering clear of if possible.

The first result I found on urban dictionary was someone who drinks too much .
Hmm.
I made up the term Losh as I prefer Larboard to Port as a description of the left hand side of a boat looking towards the front of it.
They changed it because it was too similar to Starboard.

No, it was because it needed to go in to Dock (port) on that side because there was a steer board hanging off the other side which would have been bashed otherwise.

That's not a good enough reason to change Larboard to Port.
