This is surely further evidence that C&RT have ceased to carry out any maintenance, rather waiting for failures and then doing repairs/replacements.
The vegetation growing out of lock gates on the upper Shroppie is incredible ... impossible to actually see timber in places.
I have seen photos of the same situation on the Grand Union, and certainly the T&M locks at Middlewich need a good clean off.
Surely leaving vegetation to grow like this weakens the gates, speeding their eventually failure ... and of course that's ignoring the spouts of water from voids in lock walls that will only get worse over time.
I realise the last three months will have made a bad situation worse, but the evidence of neglect was apparent last year ... clearing vegetation from lock gates and walls is not a highly skilled or technical job, just simple labour with a hoe.

Hoe, Hoe, Hoe. What makes you think C&RT know its bad for the gates or even care? Its those damn vandals planting seeds again.

I suspect in a lot of cases, they are seeing the stuff growing as a temporary fix to the leaking gates... the vegetation slowing down the amount of water leaking through them... seems like a barmy enough through process. What with that and the volunteers not being around for the last 4 months, I suppose they'll use "covid" as an excuse for more stoppages that might otherwise have been avoided.
Having looked at the winter works planned again... routes north to south are like Unicorns! I think it's time to put Ellis on wheels!

Rog I've been trying to highlight this for over 2 years. Waste of time posting it on here. It's CRT you need to make aware.

I am unconvinced they're even pretending to care anymore.
My most recent e mail protesting the removal of the services at Hurleston merely said sorry we told you two years ago the elsan was to be re-sited as it isn't.
Took two weeks to get that response.

I asked C&RT whether Calverley services were open nearly 2 years ago. The eventual reply weeks later was "where is Calverley" So I told them, Shroppie. Never got another response.
space a waste are they of. Reorder to read my opinion. No chance of C&RT working that out. Too technical for them.
