The back door on my boat has rotted and needs replacement. It's 1" ply. Looking around, it's pretty expensive and the sheet size means there would be a lot of waste. I've found some smaller panels of 12mm ply with hardly any waste. My plan is to get 2 of these cut to size then glue them together.
The difficult bit is fitting the lock. It's a slim mortice type that fits within the timber of the door. The chances of me being able to use drills to make a suitable hole for the lock are around zero. So, my idea was to measure carefully then use chisels to make a suitable notch in each panel, before gluing them together. The question is, do chisels and plywood go well together? The notches wouldn't need to be perfect, but they'd need to be pretty good. Is this doable?
