As title.
Any suggestions to fix or is it phone CRT and wait? Southern GU Lock if that makes a difference. Paddle a bout 2/3rds open, can open it fully but just will not close.

It's a simple mechanism, so I guess something will be jamming it.
Have you a keb or long shaft to check around ?

Tried with the boathook and pole, can't really feel anything obvious but not sure if I'm checking in the best places.

Could be a worn rack, or pinion or both. I've had that before where it jams the whole thing. Does it wind up ?

Yes. Jump in and have a rummage around with your fingers. Ask someone else to wind the paddle up and down when you're down in the murky depths.

Open fully. The open a bottom paddle or two to create some flow through the top paddle, with the aim of flushing whatever is blocking it, out. Close bottom paddles, then try to close top paddle.
Failing that find a small Victorian boy, hold them by the ankles and dunk them into the canal so their eyes are level with the paddle aperture. Lift out and reward the report with a small piece of mouldy bread. If they subsequently manage to clear the blockage, a larger piece of mouldy bread is a suitable reward.

Tried first option already - the pound above lost a bit too much water for me to be brave enough to have another go...

Funnily enough the magnet fishers who caught a shotgun wrapped in plastic with a couple of bricks decided to throw it back in and pretend they knew nothing!
This was below the lock though so unlikely to be a cause of the blockage...

The top paddle is often in a side chamber under the paddle, not in the side of the lock. So its very hard to get to with water in the lock and draining it down till you can see it would involve pumping out the lock.
Its a diver job!

Which lock, . . and which direction are you going ? How long is the pound above ?
