Plastic mates seem to be on the up, is it a covid puppy substitute? @tonyc, Wilson seems to be ruling the roost, not sure he's beneficial. Time, in the words of Bob, to drive the crazy bal' 'ead out of town.

Time, in the words of Bob, to drive the crazy bal' 'ead out of town. I have wondered a lot about obtaining a dog tbh- they are great companions. And it might happen at some point, but I already know how it would go. I'm such a softie, I cant say no to a dog. Within a week the dog would be sleeping on my bed and I'd be sleeping on the floor, so as not to ruin their sleep. In my ex's house we had two rottweilers who couldnt bear to be more than a few feet from us, and would climb onto the bed in the early hours. I passed many a winter night only half covered by the duvet, because the female rottie would lie in middle and pull the duvet almost off of me. And that was on top of the tiny jack russell that would slip down the covers and lay flat against my lower back to absorb maximum heat (because I'm pretty hot stuff in bed, in a thermal sense). Confession time- dont tell anyone here, but I don't actually have a football with a face painted on it. It was a joke made by an old colleague who thought I'd end up a bit mental, like Tom Hanks with his basketball in Castaway. So I dont actually have conversations with a football (yet), but I know for a fact I'd be discussing current affairs - in some detail- if I had a dog upon whom to inflict my opinions. "Yes, that's that nasty PM Fido. He's nasty isnt he? We dont like him do we? No we dont. Clever boy Fido, help yourself to another treat." Apart from the issue of nearby boaters hearing one-sided conversations coming from my boat, there is the issue of care and attention. I would be worried leaving the dog aboard if I had to take a trip somewhere for the day, and having a dog with me would stop me going into many places of interest, restaurants, pubs, etc (assuming they ever reopen). There is of course the cost of medical bills too- every time we took one of the dogs to the vet the bill started at £200 and generally went up pretty quickly, and with an older dog I'd be worried about the cost of operations etc, that could run into thousands. I'm certainly not ruling out a dog, but looking after one as a solo boater seems like it might cause a lot of hassle and restrictions that I need to think about.

Well, I'm not sure what's worse, talking to a plastic fiend or talking to an imaginary plastic fiend.

Well, I'm not sure what's worse, talking to a plastic fiend or talking to an imaginary plastic fiend. What a terrible, terrible song- if its even a song. Performance poetry perhaps. But sometimes I look back over Top of the Pops episodes from the 70s, and you see so many acts who would never be allowed near a national TV audience these days. All those nutty songs, odd-looking artists- and many of them are very entertaining, funny, musical, or creative- or all four together. Nowadays the people in charge will only allow new singers into the charts if they are under 22 and beautiful, and I suspect we have lost a wealth of musical treasures. There used to be a whole genre of borderline novelty songs- artists like The Strawbs, The Barron Knights, or Buggles, songs like Kung Fu Fighting, One Night in Bangkok, Whispering Grass, Ernie the milkman. There are so few humorous and yet melodic songs these days. It feels like music has lost its sense of humour.

My grandad had the disc pictured here, probably one of the first records I ever saw and heard.

Grandad also used to sing this, known to me as "Suzannahs a funicle man", not "The old sow" song as here.

Freya is not permitted to go upstairs..she sleeps in a cage...she is penned for several hours a day.. I love her but she lives in my world not me in hers with dog ownership comers responsibility..what i allow her to do has to be ok in the future... so far have more or less got it right...I think.... she is very funny with son who is not so strict and as for daughter she gets very excited and pees on her feet!..that is (for the hard of understanding) dog pees on daughters feet......
Deep down I'd love to let her upstairs, on the bed but then she would never accept the pen as a place to go.
