I’ve got a friend with a 65ft narrowboat he has a danforth anchor, he asked me how much chain and warp. I have no idea for a narrowboat, so anybody know.

I don’t think you can answer the question because it depends on the depth of water you want to use it in. Ultimately the more the better, and the more chain vs warp the better.

Ultimately the more the better, and the more chain vs warp the better. yes that’s what I would have thought, but difficult to buy in and store in “the more the better,” amounts. So any ball park figures. I’d hazard about 8-10 meters of decent chain and then maybe 15-20m of warp. But I don’t know.

For the conditions any narrow canal boat should ever find itself in on any river, tidal or otherwise, around 20' of 5/16'' or 3/8" chain plus 60' of 16mm Polyester warp is quite adequate.
Of far more use than an anchor in the event of an engine breakdown underway, however, is a dropping-down weight - a 'mud weight' in pleasure boat parlance - which, with a bit of practice in how to use it, allows you to at least make some progress with the current or tide to somewhere a lot more convenient than wherever you happen to have broken down.

Thanks very much Tony.I’ll pass on the advice. By the way what’s happening with water levels by you. I was dragging gravel even before I got to Barton island the other day.

The river's not especially low at the moment, . . pretty much normal Summer level, . . the sand and gravel build up you were running over the other day is what last Winter's floods left behind. The Trent from Cranfleet down to Beeston has always 'made-up' during floods on Thrumpton Shoal and topside of Barton Island, and since both routine and post flooding remedial dredging was completely abandoned by BWB in the 1980's both 'least depth' spots have got progressively shallower with every major flood.

Yes Tony, I’m aware of why it’s an issue and yet again carts negligence is undeniable to all but the blind. But I was just wondering if it was worth trying to get down to Beeston or not? Apparently rcr issued a warning about grounding along that stretch. It seems they’ve been called out to 16 or so groundings.

Of course you should try to get down to Beeston, . . and if you can't get past Barton Island make sure you ground in the deepest part of what's left of the MNC there. An impassable river full of grounded boats that can't get past you should quickly produce some sort of result !

Yes Yes Tony I’m sure you would love that, but it’s not a position I would knowingly put myself or Medlock into. If you remember I already had that incident running aground on a concrete block, that cart knew was there but they hadn’t sign posted. I’ve since heard that it’s marked now. I hope they remove it before any commercial traffic to Leeds starts ha ha ha ha.........
