I've had two of Maplins own brand inverters for the boat now. One 150 Watt and another 300 Watt. Both went U/S just after a year. I mentioned it to the lad in the shop (who was clearly not interested). He suggested they were under too much load. I only use it on the rare occasions something is interesting on TV. The TV and satellite receiver only draw 30 Watts between them. In any event there is supposedly an overload warning on these inverters which has never gone off. So anyway, I've now bought a great little 120W inverter made by Ring. It even has a tiny fan for cooling which you can barely hear. Fingers crossed that won't blow in a years time! PS Shouldn't have bought it from Maplin though. Now found it for about £15 cheaper on Amazon! Doh! www.amazon.co.uk/Ring-RINV120-Compact-Inverter-laptops/dp/B002XDERD8

I had a 300w cheapo inverter that looked identical to the Maplin own brand version ( black extruded ali case jobby) for several years, it worked impeccably until I lent it to someone who blew it up for me. I replaced it with a Maplin version (the original came from an electrical wholesaler) It appears identical apart from the addition of a USB port. Been using it for just under a year .............. Do you think I should open it up and see if I can spot the count down timer ?

Maybe I should listen to her.

I've had a Maplin 300w inverter for years, it's done sterling service running a TV & separate DVD player, it's also been fine running a slow cooker. God knows how many hours it's done, lots is the quick answer!
It's being pensioned off onto my mates boat as I have upgraded to a 1000w pure sine wave Sterling - that was part of the rear cockpit refit so the 300w was is now surplus to requirements.

The sterling was too good to miss, £270 on eBay new in the box from Midland Chandlers, had been on display - not a mark on it. I went for a pure sine wave as we use a karcher window vac for condensation removal from the windows, it's only got a crude charger so the risk of frying the battery with a modified sine wave was quite high. 1000w is overkill tbh, but, it is nice to use an electric kettle, toaster etc while underway. Also means we can have the slow cooker on at the same time as the idiot lantern if the little un is in an unsociable mood. Should it go bang it's back to gas power and colouring books

I went into a Maplin shop about a year ago, I forget what for, but it struck me as being another load-of-old-crap shop just like Halfords-don't-know-nuffin. Perhaps Maplin should be called Craplin?

Anyway, I shall be a bit less noisy this week here - but much more noisy waving the chainsaw around! The forest around the bus garage in Kannus where I work is getting tidied up, and I seem to be the only one with a chainsaw. Nobody else wants the trees that are being cut down so I'm snaffling them for firewood. Started Saturday and this evening after work got the third trailer-load ready. There's 5 years' worth of firewood to be had - just time and petrol required (and chainsaw oil). Still, I hate sharpening chains, it's a bit like ironing shirts, just dreary.

An astute observation Mr Fox OK for components like resistors etc if you buy online and use the click and collect option - no need to converse with the spotty oiks in ill fitting clothes.
