I asked the quack to look at my blood sample when I had pneumonia 4 years ago with a view to checking if I was consuming too much alcohol. It turned out I wasn't. Which was nice. His response to "do you think I am drinking too much?" Was "if you like a glass of wine then carry on no problems". It's slightly odd as I never drink wine. The times I have had a glass of wine in last ten years I could count on one hand. Beer and cider on the other hand... I guess he had me down as reasonably posh but not one of the movers and shakers and not one of the layabout dead beats who consume from cans. Assumption is a terrible thing isn't it. I know a few people who had liver problems through drink. All of them drank either wine or spirits. Others, some of whom drink up to a dozen pints off beer every day, have had no problems. I know this is far from scientific but it does seem that smaller amounts of very strong alcohol are more damaging than larger amounts of lower strength stuff. On this basis I avoid drinking wine all the time. Instead, I alternate this with Home bargain's high strength cider. 7.5% it may be, but that's not as bad as 13%, right?

I've never got on with higher ABV. 5% lager/beer or 6% cider. Can't remember the last time I had anything over 10%.

I've always been relatively healthy, but 4 years ago, after experiencing 1 symptom, I went to the doctor and tests showed bladder cancer. After 3 minor ops and immunology treatments, I have been clear for 9 months. I also have a lesion on my pancreas, which the first scan showed up, and I now have regular checks for that. You're right when you say that once they get their claws into you, but its better than ignorance when everything shows up too late. I just wish there was a bit more joined up thinking so that everything could be done at the same time. At one stage, I was under 3 different departments and had 4 days in one week where I had nothing but medical appointments. Good luck with your progress, and everyone else, DON'T IGNORE SYMPTOMS !!!!!

There was an episode of Louis Theroux where he followed the fortunes of a small group of alcoholics (all of whom were primarily beer drinkers). One of the subjects had some issue where his body could no longer deal with the disposal of liquid. It accumulated till his abdomen was severely distended. The only solution was to visit a hospital clinic where it was drained off with a tube. He did that once a week or so.

Funny that you should bump this thread because I was back at the Docs 1st thing this morning for yet more blood tests. Today was quite mild as the only took 3 phials of blood bringing it to a total of 14...... and tuesday I have a ultrasound to look forward to. Had no indication of what they are looking for nor what they have found. Sigh, getting rather bored with it now hopefully they find nothing untoward with the sonograph and I can relax Phil PS I'll let you know
