I've added some new subjects to the boating section and moved 'Waterways and Boating' to the top. Any suggestions on other boards to add, or how to arrange things?

I like the idea of "New to Boating" being as I am in fact new to boating myself. Or perhaps more correctly pre-new to boating, never having "boated" so to speak...

Hi and welcome to the forum If you don't mind me asking, at what stage are you in the "new to boating"...saving up for the purchase, searching the internet sites looking at what boats are for sale, going to boatyards/marina's looking at different boats for sale etc etc What are you plans for the boat when you do get it? Leisure or Live aboard? The reason I ask these questions is it may help the more knowlegable members to point you in the right direction. Take care

Leisure or Live aboard? The reason I ask these questions is it may help the more knowlegable members to point you in the right direction. Take care Hi Bettina, Long story short-ish.. There are three of us, Me 54, SWMBO 50 and our Son who is 14, plus a Dog a Cat and a Spider. He is home schooled, she is at uni studying to be a pediatric nurse and I am a self employed part time Blacksmith. We have been thinking of moving out of rented accommodation for a long time and have mooted many different ideas from building a roundhouse in the woods to converting a 7.5 ton horsebox as a home, all have serious drawbacks one of them being money (lack of) and space (ditto). One of the ideas was a Narrowboat, it is about the only idea we have all agreed sounds good. we have had a small recce to the K&A looking at boats visited Hilperton and Devizes marina sat in and climbed over a few for sale, lusted after a wide beam and a Dutch barge for silly money and admitted that a Narrowboat is much more affordable. We have a small pension due next June and with a small loan can just about scrape together in the order of 35,000. we are hoping to CC in an area that will allow swmbo a reasonable commute to and from work and still keep CRT happy. Long term I have seen a chap who is also a Blacksmith who has a small floating forge he uses and the idea of doing something similar is very appealing. We are looking for something in the region of 60ft, 3 or 4 berth solid but not necessarily all mod cons. No fixed idea where yet as it will depend on lots of as yet undecided factors, but we did think of somewhere around York or Bristol as a working idea, but the canal system is our oyster so to speak. We live in Cornwall at the moment, not much in the way of canals in Cornwall unless you count the couple of hundred feet of Bude (oddly it has a barge and some kind of Panzerkampfnarrowboat on it at the moment) We are off up to Yorkshire late in November for a birthday so plan to do some more investigating while we are up there. As plans go, it lacks some substance I know but it is all we have at the moment. Nothing is set in stone...

Greetings Trollspindle and welcome to the Thunderboat !
I will keep mostly out of this one as my CCing was a long long time ago, and things have not got any easier (in fact they seem to have got a damn sight harder)
It requires quite a bit of dedication and a lot of work to CC within the guidelines but it is a long way from impossible. Your son being home schooled removes one of the biggest obstacles that CCers seem to find but I wonder how difficult commuting to either Uni (or work) might be.
Having a home mooring does make things a heck of a lot more civilised, especially if there is shore power, water etc there or very nearby. When CCing I used to find a large proportion of my free (?) time was spent just moving/fueling/coaling/shuffling car etc. Working from a home mooring gave me a heck of a lot more time to devote to A) earning a living and B) doing some of the inumerablr jobs that always seem to need doing on a boat.
There are CCers on here who will probably be along to give you chapter and verse and will be a hell of a lot more up to date than me.
Good luck with your ideas !

Thanks for the welcome and insight John, I'm not really opposed to the idea of some kind of home mooring but i don't think I'd like to be cheek by jowl in a marina. A mooring with some basic amenities nearby, but without the added expense of a marina would be fine I guess, some kind of middle ground
